Mexico Breeders Futurity Consolation
MOONIN CORONA
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The 10 horses that qualified to this race arrived on Dec. 12, for their second meeting at 400 yards.
The purse to reward from first to fifth place was $198,240 pesos ($9,380 U.S. approx.), which corresponds to 6% of the payments for nominations and fees made by the owners of the horses registered in the race.
The favorite in the wagering was Moonin Corona, who on June 27 won the AQHA
John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge. The actions on the track gave merit to those who
so wagered, because the filly had the most timely departure and was well managed by Yair Daniel Báez Soto, who took advantage of her favorable position in the race (#9) and crossed the finish line with a neck advantage over El Nugget Corona.
She covered the 400 yards in :19.99 for
an 81 speed index. Certainly, a demanding distance for these two-year-old runners, as only
Moonin Corona, El Nugget Corona and Sol Corona earned a speed index of 80. The others fell below this mark.
The winner is a daughter of the stallion Moonin The Eagle and out of the mare Sunset Stunner (by Corona Cartel), and is bred by John Andreini. She is owned
by Mr. Everardo Múzquiz Elguezábal, who purchased the mare in-foal at the 2019 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale in Oklahoma, and raised her on his ranch in the State of Coahuila.
Her trainer, Rubén
Romo Hernández, regretted that days before running her trial, she had a colic that affected her performance, and she did not qualify for the main event but to the consolation. Proof
is that she has now improved and has already recovered from the disorder. In her trial (the
first of four), she finished in fourth place.
With this result her record is 2-1-0 in 4 outings and $99,210 pesos ($4,694 U.S. approx.) is added
to her earnings account, which already exceeds $500 thousand pesos.
El Nuggett Corona finished in second place, having qualified in the same position for this race. He is a son of Corona On The Rocks out of Eta (by Saldi TB), and
had Alejandro Gómez in the stirrups. He is owned by Granja La Esperanza and trained by the young José Marcelo González Godínez.
In third place was the colt Sol Corona, a son
