Jolene aboard In Tha Beginning by JL Dash Ta Heaven at the 2021 Lance Graves International Championships.
Jolene riding Jet Fuel Only, who was the inaugural OKC Rookie Futurity Champion and Equistat earner of over $100,000.
In the approximately five years that she worked at the Bar Nothin, Jolene worked with other accomplished barrel horses such as Flitin Firin Cash (Cash Not Credit-Gin N Firewater, Fire Water Flit—2001 filly), trained by Kassie Mowery, who won the AQHA Senior Barrels World Championship; JL Dash Ta Heaven (Dash Ta Fame-Dynas Plain Special, Special Feelins—2005 colt); Return Of The Bully (Bully Bowlan Bug-Less Return, Dashing Investment—2009 Barrel Racing Report’s Co-Champion 4-Year-Old Mare) and 2010 BFA Futurity Champion Aced My Bully (Bully Bowlan Bug-Lady Rompin, Tiny Tornado Too).
JL Dash Ta Heaven earned the 2009 Barrel Racing Report’s Champion 4-Year-Old Stallion title and was the youngest stallion among the top 30 Lifetime Leaders as of 2020. He also won the AQHA Junior Barrels and the SAHA Junior Pole Bending. “He was probably my biggest success,” Jolene says. “He was the biggest handful and I probably put more time and energy into training him than I have any other horse!”
The accomplishment stands out to Jolene’s youngest sister, Haylee Layman of Springer, Oklahoma. “He was so studdy!” she says. “He was full of energy and loud and obnoxious. Jolene wanted to cut him, but Jud would not, and then he started to come on, so she gave him one more weekend and he won from then on!”
“I had to get extremely creative in how I trained him because the general stuff didn’t always work,” Jolene adds. “It took a really long time, but it was totally worth it. He’s still probably among the top three most talented horses I’ve ever swung a leg over. He’s creating his own legacy now as a stud and it’s just awesome to watch and be a part of. I’ll always cherish every run with him, for sure.”
A few of her other outstanding trainees:
• Marthas Sixshooter (Bug In My Frosty- Marthas Moon View, Marthas Six Moons—2009 gelding)
• Dashin Czar (Tres Seis-Dashin La Jolla, Streakin La Jolla—2010 filly)
• KN Fabs Mist Of Fame (Frenchmans Fabulous-Mistys Dash Of Fame, Dash Ta Fame—2008 mare), the 2012 Old Fort Days Futurity Champion and NFR qualifier, and a full sister to Ivy Saebens’ NFR mount “JLo”. • MCM Imasharpguy, aka Sharpie (A Sharp Frenchman-Mulberry Canyon Moon, Marthas Six Moons—2012 colt). “I trained him and started his futurity year on him,” Jolene says. “He won the Double Crown in Arizona and Stevi Hillman won the NFR on him two years. Troy Crumrine finished out his futurity year, winning his fair share on him as well.”
• Jets Heart N Soul, aka Prince (Blazin Jetolena-Mistys Dash Of Fame, Dash Ta Fame—2014 colt). “His dam, Mistys Dash
Of Fame [Dash Ta Fame-Misty Blurr, Murrtheblurr] is arguably the best barrel racing broodmare there is,” Jolene says. “Prince won two or three futurities, was second at the Pink Buckle his futurity year, and won the Derby
at Fort Smith. He’s just one of those insanely talented horses; he’s a giant diva and he knows it. I broke arena records on him, and he is definitely one of my more recent favorites.”
• Jet Fuel Only (Blazin Jetolena-KR Famous Pearls, Dash Ta Fame—2016 colt) was the inaugural OKC Rookie Futurity Champion and Equistat winner of over $100,000.
• Famous Sierra (JL Dash Ta Heaven-Sierras Cashin In, Cash Not Credit—2015 colt) who now stands at Highpoint Quarter Horses

Penn Little described Jolene as “hungry and infectiously passionate,”and a trainer who could “out-drink, out-work, and out-optimism the heck out of all of us.”
