2021 FRESHMAN SIRE OF THE YEAR
A Revenant
by Michael Compton
ITshould come as little surprise that the deceased stallion A Revenant was posthumously
crowned Champion Freshman Sire of 2021. A son of multiple AQHA Champion and acclaimed stallion Mr Jess Perry and out of the Rainbow Futurity-G1 winner Thewayouwantmetoo, by Mr Eye Opener, A Revenant could have become a stallion based on pedigree alone. Not to rest
on the success of his genes, A Revenant became
a Grade 1 winner himself, as well as a the 2016 AQHA Champion Two-Year-Old Colt. Safe to say, winning runs in the family.
Owned by the partnership of R.D. Hubbard, Butch Southway, Johnny Cope, and Rafter W Stables, A Revenant died in 2019 following an extended battle with laminitis. Named Champion 2-Year-Old Colt of 2016,
A Revenant won three of four career starts, including the prestigious Rainbow Futurity-G1, and was second in the Ruidoso Futurity-G1
in a stellar juvenile season. Trained by Mike Joiner and ridden in all his races by Cody Jensen, A Revenant, who was bred in Oklahoma by Julianna Hawn Holt and was a $152,000 Ruidoso Select Sale graduate in 2015, retired to stud having earned $604,800.
Matt and Bendi Dunn of Dunn Ranch acquired the stallion’s frozen semen and have offered it to breeders through ICSI breedings
to the Champion and Champion sire.
