                 AQHA RACING UPDATE
“I learn so I can do a better job of protecting the horse. I learn so I can do a better job of protecting the industry.”
SCIENCE AND QUARTER HORSE RACING
October 2023
by Janet VanBebber, AQHA Chief Racing Officer
I’ve learned a lot since assuming the position of Chief Racing Officer at the American Quarter Horse Association. As a lifelong horseman, my
skillset lends itself well to understanding the industry and the issues we face. But, also as a horseman, most of my practical knowledge is rooted in personal experience rather than science. So, I have committed to learning more. I learn so I can do a better job of protecting the horse. I learn so I can do a better job of protecting the industry. I learn so I can help lead our Association in the right direction when supporting initiatives.
I serve on the Board of Directors for the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium and the Gluck Equine Research Foundation. I am also an advisor for two grant supported research endeavors, both which are examining potential dangers to racehorses.
So, what does this involvement mean to you? Know that through my engagement with these organizations I am constantly striving to protect the horses you raise, own, or train. There are meetings that address a wide array of science based subject matter, including emergent threats, performance enhancing drugs, medicines that have unintended negative consequences to a horse’s wellbeing when administered off-label, and even how to better recognize soundness issues. From there, we work to educate and, in some cases, regulate. But the bottom line, we are working for you to protect the horse.
Would you like to hear more on the topic? Considering attending the AQHA Racing Committee meeting scheduled for Friday, October 20, 2023, at Lone Star Park. This
is an open meeting that is part of the Racing Conference held in conjunction with the Bank
of America Racing Challenge Championships,
to be contested the following day on Saturday, October 21. Guest speakers will be there to address regulatory matters, intelligence based anti- doping, StrideSAFE technology, and other topics. Come listen and know that you will be given the opportunity to ask questions.
For details about the AQHA Racing Conference, see the schedule provided. Lone Star Park has always proven to be a gracious host of our premier event, and we know you will enjoy being there!
