Hits Two-Year Lows in June.” But the price is far from right. Prices are out of hand and just because inflation is down does not mean prices are down. Inflation was up around 9% year-over-year at one-point last year. Now inflation is up just over 3% year-over-year. What people fail to recognize is that prices are not down 6% from where they were.
Prices grew 9% and then grew an additional 3%. Prices are still on the rise, just not as significantly as they were a year ago.
If you’re selling horses during these
times, then you are in pretty good shape.
It’s apparent that things have changed when you’re wondering why a yearling sells for less than $50,000. For this article, I wanted to do
a fun calculation on career earnings for horses that have won the All American Futurity. In the table below, you will find every horse that won the richest Quarter Horse race dating back to 1959 with their career earnings and, perhaps more interestingly, their inflation- adjusted career earnings. I found the calculations to be fascinating.

I would like to point out that Higheasterjet is the highest earning Quarter Horse when adjusted for inflation. It’s unique to look back at the first decades of the All American Futurity and see what those earnings would be worth today. Some of the horse’s earnings are astronomical,
being over four and five million dollars.
This is a very relatable example to show the effects of inflation. It’s important to consider inflation-adjusted prices when dealing with your budget and your investments.
The analogy I like to use for inflation is death by a thousand cuts. You won’t really
feel it at first, but eventually it causes your dollar to be worth much less. As this table shows, inflation can have a major effect over the years. I always encourage folks to keep their cash working, if not for them then for their kids or the charities they plan to donate to.
