FIRST LADY ON CANVAS
First Lady On Canvas, a homebred daughter of First Moonflash and the third-fastest qualifier, sprinted to a wire-to-wire victory in the October 30, $350,730 New Mexico Classic Quarter Horse Futurity (RG2) for state-bred 2-year-old Quarter Horses at Zia Park.
Trained by Xavier Rodriguez for owner MRB Racing LLC, First Lady On Canvas went 350 yards in :17.507, and her winning margin was three-quarters of a length from second- fastest qualifier Flash Divine. Esgar Ramirez rode the bay filly.
First Lady On Canvas made her local debut with a three-quarter length victory in one of eight New Mexico Cup Futurity trials on October 8. The filly’s sire, the First To Flash stallion First Moonflash, was the AQHA champion aged stallion in 2009, as he ended his career with a four-race win streak that included a nose victory in the 440-yard, $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park (G1).
Racing from 2007-09, First Moonflash won
a total of 10 stakes and earned $969,828 from 25 starts. The stallion has sired the earners of more than $25.1 million from 10 crops, including AQHA champions Foxy Moonflash, Handsome Jack Flash, and Flash And Roll, and graded stakes winners Too Flash For You, Mad About The Moon and Ryansmanonthemoon. First Moonflash died after a battle with laminitis in May 2019.
First Lady On Canvas is out of Paint On Canvas, a winning 7-year-old daughter of the Corona Cartel stallion PYC Paint Your Wagon and a finalist in the 2018 Rainbow Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs. The filly’s second dam, the Executive Menace mare Executive Looks, won two graded stakes from 2008-10, including the 2008 Manor Downs Futurity (G1).
First Lady On Canvas traces back to her
third dam, Sticky N Picky, a stakes-winning daughter of the Easy Jet stallion Sticks An Stones who ran second in Brotherly’s 1994 Pomona Championship Handicap (G1) at the Los Angeles County Fair, and was a finalist in the 1993 Rainbow Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs and Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Trinity Meadows.
First Lady On Canvas broke her maiden with a wire-to-wire, 2 1/2-length win in a 300- yard, $15,000 maiden-special-weight dash for juvenile fillies at Lone Star Park near Dallas on September 23. All told, the filly has won three of seven races, and the $171,858 winner’s share of the New Mexico Cup Futurity purse pushed her earnings to $187,443.
RC Jessa Flashn ran third, one length behind First Lady On Canvas, and was followed by Elisas Esperance, Flash Me The Price, Flecha Gris, Would Be You, Moon Jumpn Jessica, Ima Alertly and fastest qualifier Mr Tres Effort.
A homebred son of First Moonflash and 2014 Zia Futurity (RG1) winner Girlonthego, Flash Divine was a finalist in the May 22, $246,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park. The sorrel colt has won two of four races for owners Jimmy Negrete and Jimmy Vazquez, and the $59,624 second-place share of the purse increased his bankroll to $86,109.
RC Jessa Flashn is a homebred bay daughter of the First Moonflash stallion A Passion For Flashn owned by RC Racing LLC. A finalist in the September 25, $626,000 New Mexico State Fair Futurity (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs, the filly has won one of nine starts, and the $35,073 third-place share of the purse ran her earnings to $62,987.
