Rex Williams’ Seventh St Diamond and Dale F. Taylor Racing’s Bryns Mark finished in a dead heat for the win in the October 30, $125,000 New Mexico Classic Lassie Championship (R) for state-bred 2-year-old fillies.
Seventh St Diamond and Bryns Mark both covered their 6-furlong trips in 1:11.52. Joree Scriver rode Seventh St Diamond for trainer Dick Cappellucci, while Bryns Mark was ridden by Alfredo Juarez Jr. for trainer Todd Fincher.
Seventh St Diamond and Bryns Mark are both daughters of Marking, a winning 10-year- old Kentucky-bred son of the A.P. Indy stallion Bernardini. Racing from 2015-16, Marking earned $426,200 from eight outs, and his record included a second-place finish in Runhappy’s 2015 Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park.
Marking has sired the earners of more than $3.02 million from three crops, and his seven official black-type stakes winners include multiple New Mexico-bred stakes winner and Grade 2 winner Slammed, and stakes winners Better Believe and Delbert Too. The stallion is owned by Fred Alexander and Todd Fincher, and he stands for a $4,000 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.
Seventh St Diamond is one of two winners from as many starters produced by her dam, Grand Flame, a winning homebred daughter of
the Citidancer stallion Le Grande Danseur. The filly traces back to her fifth dam, the winning and stakes-placed Bicker mare Iza Valentine. A California-bred 1976 foal, Iza Valentine foaled three stakes winners, including 1985 Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Fran’s Valentine and Iz A Saros, the winner of the 1988 Silver Screen Handicap (G2) at Hollywood Park.
A homebred, Seventh St Diamond has won two of four races and has earned $103,950. The filly was coming off of a neck victory in a 5 1/2-furlong, $35,000 maiden-special-weight race for state-bred fillies at Zia Park on October 5.
Bryns Mark is the first starter produced
by Bryn’s Fancy Pants, a homebred 9-year-old daughter of Southwestern Heat who won five stakes in New Mexico from 2015-18, including the 2018 New Mexico Cup Distaff Sprint Championship (R). The filly’s second dam, the Devon Lane mare Fan’s Cat, won the 2011 Lincoln Handicap (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
Bryns Mark traces back to her third dam, the winning Geiger Counter mare Little Fan. Little Fan foaled two more stakes winners, both of whom are half siblings to Fan’s Cat, including 2004 Totah Futurity (R) winner Geiger Gold.
Bryns Mark broke her maiden in her career debut, as the filly scored a six-length victory in a 5 1/2-furlong, $11,000 maiden-special-weight race
at Ruidoso Downs on June 24. The filly has won two of four races and has banked $33,762, and she was a finalist in the August 14, 5 1/2-furlong Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
Mama Was A Rocket was third, one length behind the dead heat winners. Doer Not A Faker, Bellamundo, Attilas Angel, Diamond Mine and Metros Lil Pollie completed the order of finish.
