A total of 32 trials were run over a two-day period at Ruidoso Downs to determine the 10 fastest qualifiers to the $3 million All American Futurity-G1 to be contested on Labor Day September 5, which is closing day of the Ruidoso Downs’ summer meet.
August 19, day one of the trials, started with a 6 mph cross wind under cloudy skies and a track rated good. The wind changed direc- tion and became a head wind by the second race with winds gusting to 16 mph. By the 5th race, the track was considered sloppy and there was a tail wind. Conditions continued this way until the last race
was contested. Three geldings and two fillies qualified to the finals on Friday from the 1st, 9th and 11th trials. Two came from the 5-hole and one each from the 1-, 3-, and 4-holes. The first day of the trials saw two homebreds make it to the final event in Hes Judgeandjury for breeders/owners Jeff Jones and Steve Holt. John and Kathy Lee’s L&L Cattle bred KJ Leader Ofthe Pack and are co-owners with their friend Ruben Mares. All five qualifiers were trained by different trainers and ridden by different jockeys. Owner Lance R. Moore is also the trainer of fastest qualifier Jes An Angel.
August 20, day two of the trials, began with rainy conditions and a sloppy track with little or no wind. For the second trial of the day, howev- er, there was a 13 mph head wind which continued throughout the day. The rain and sloppy conditions held until the ninth trial when the rain let up, and by the 14th trial the track was rated muddy. Four geldings and one filly qualified on Saturday, coming from the 1st, 2nd, 6th and 16th trials. Qualifiers exited from the 4-, 5-, 6-, 8-, and 9-gates. There was
one homebred to qualify to the finals from day two of the trials in Curls Joyful Wagon for breeder/owner Martin Stacy. All five qualifiers from day two were trained by different trainers and ridden by different jockeys.
When we look at the 10 horses going to the All American Futurity from both days of trials combined, we see that only Steve A. Holt had two horses to qualify to the finals in Hes Judgeandjury from day 1 (co- owner with Jeff D. Jones) and Chasing AJ from day 2 (co-owner with Charles Cox, Jack Powers and Roger Moore). Trainers Santos Carrizales Jr. and M. Heath Taylor both qualified two horses, while jockeys Juan Pulido and Rodrigo Sigala Vallejo qualified two as well. No sire quali- fied more than one horse to the finals.
