understand the racing industry and they work hard at it. They really study their breedings and do the best they can to raise them up correctly.”
“I used to go to Remington to race back in WRS Special Shoe’s days,” says Randy. “He was the Iowa State Champion, he was inducted into the Prairie Meadows Hall of Fame and raced
in Louisiana. But I had open heart surgery last September and was awful sick for a while there. I’m feeling so much better now, and it seems to suit us better these days to drive just about five hours to Indianapolis and stay in our camper four or five miles from the track.”
THEIR HOMEBRED STARS
Randy’s short list of homebred stars includes WRS Special Shoe, WRS Valentino and WRS Moonin Thewagon.
“WRS Special Shoe was the best horse we ever owned,” Randy says of the Heath Taylor-trained
gelding. “He was by First Down Laveaux and
I bred him on advice of Brent Taylor. His dad owned that horse and we bred Hava Zevi to him and got WRS Special Shoe, who was inducted into the Prairie Meadows Hall of Fame and
was ranked second by wins as a 2 year old. He qualified for the Central Juvenile Challenge-G3 at Canterbury, then won six in a row. His money line shows about $880,000 but he won way over $1 million because he also got a lot of money from the state of Iowa due to being an Iowa-Bred.”
The gelding’s freshman wins included his
trials and the finals for the Iowa Double Gold Futurity-G3 and the Jim Bader Futurity-G3 at Prairie Meadows, and his Kansas Futurity-G2 trial at The Woodlands, where he ran fourth in the final.
At three, WRS Special Shoe ran second in the Canterbury Derby Challenge-G3 and the Iowa Double Gold Derby-G3 at Prairie Meadows, then won the Polk County Derby-G3. He finished
that year with thirds in the Altoona Derby-G3 at Prairie Meadows and the AQHA Derby Challenge Championship-G1 at Prairie Meadows.
As a 4 year old, WRS Special Shoe ran second in the Keokuk Stakes-G3, the Central Championship Challenge-G2 and the Terrace Hill Stakes-G3, all at Prairie Meadows.
He then won the 6666 Ranch Handicap
and ran second in the AQHA Challenge Championship-G1, both at Lone Star.
He campaigned at Remington Park at 5, where he ran third in the Eastex Handicap-G3 and the Oklahoma Championship Challenge-G1, and second in the Remington Park Invitational Championship. At Prairie Meadows that year, he took second in the Keokuk Stakes-G3 and won the Terrace Hill Stakes-G3.
He finished a nine-year race campaign with a 74-23-22-15 record, finishing in the money 81% of the time.
