TRACK CHATTER
 RACING BEGINS IN RUIDOSO
Ruidoso Downs Race Track opened its summer meet as scheduled on May 22 with the trials for the Ruidoso Futurity and Derby.
Ruidoso Downs’ meet began without fans in attendance. Simulcast broadcasts and online betting is available for fans. A date has not been set for when fans and owners will be allowed to attend the races as there is currently a Public Health Order in place that limits mass gatherings due to COVID-19.
As of press time, only NMRC licensed training staff, jockeys and track officials are allowed on the premises. Ruidoso Downs developed an operational protocol for barn area occupants to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by requiring daily temperature and health screenings. Face coverings are required for everyone at the track.
“Our first priority is providing a safe environment for horsemen, horses, guests and employees, and that will require everyone’s cooperation,” said Jeff True, Ruidoso Downs president and general manager. “As the State of New Mexico moves into Phase 2 and beyond, we are hopeful that we will be able to invite guests in a limited way. We expect to update our public attendance plans in early June.”
Once a date has been established for live attendance at the races, Ruidoso Downs will inform season ticket holders and make credits or adjustments to their season seat accounts.
“We understand that our season ticket holders likely have questions,” said True. “We are planning on and looking forward to welcoming you at some point soon for the 2020 season, but should anything be confirmed otherwise, we will reach out to you immediately.”

INDIANA GRAND GRANTED 94-DAY MEET
In May, the Indiana Horse Racing Commission unanimously approved Indiana Grand’s modified request for race dates in
2020. The 94-day season began June 15 and will conclude on Nov. 18, with a Monday through Thursday schedule with four select Saturdays of Quarter Horse-only racing over the span of the meet.
Also approved as a part of the agenda
was a request by Indiana Grand and the Indiana horsemen’s groups to offer what is believed to be the lowest takeout on any wager in North America. The request asking for the Pick 5 to be offered at a takeout of 11.99 per- cent was also approved unanimously and will take place on the last five Thoroughbred races each day. The Pick 5 will be a straight carry- over wager without a unique ticket provision.
“We’ve said for the last month that the 2020 calendar might need to be fluid and after consultation with our horsemen we’re happy
to be approved for this 94-day meet.” said Eric Halstrom, Vice President and General Manager of Racing. “When you consider that our busi- ness will have been shut down for nearly three months, it’s very rewarding to offer overnight purses that are consistent or higher than 2019 and a quality stakes calendar for both breeds.”
The revised calendar will be published online at www.IndianaGrand.com. Horsemen are encouraged to contact Kevin Greely at (317) 421-3080 for more information or with questions on any racing office matters.
RACING RETURNS TO DELTA DOWNS
Delta Downs opened its Quarter Horse meet on June 10 after the Louisiana Racing Commission unanimously approved the track’s request to amend its Quarter Horse race dates for 2020.
The 36-date season will run through Aug. 22. Delta was originally scheduled to start its Quarter Horse meet on April 17.
Delta Downs will offer a minimum of nine races daily Wednesday through Saturday. First post time for Wednesday and Thursday racing will be 5:15 p.m. (CDT), while first post time for Friday and Saturday racing is set for 6:15. Visit www.deltadowns.com/ for the latest and updated stakes schedule.
