Flash Bak is eligible to run in the All American Derby-G1. “I’d like to freshen him up and take him for the All American,” Gomez said. “This horse is learning little by little.”
Gomez has trained for Streelman for decades.
“We talk at least three to four times a week,” the trainer said. “I have his mares at my ranch. He’s the only owner I’ve always had since I started training. He’s never quit me.”
Streelman and Bill Dale bred Flash Bak in Missouri from Checknbac. The mare has pro- duced five winners in nine starters, including Cobalt Creek, winner of the 2017 Refrigerator Handicap-G1 and 2018 Evangeline Downs 550 Stakes, and stakes-placed Distant Fury and Eagle Cry.
The family is rich in black type. Running Bac, the second dam, won four stakes in a row at Los Alamitos in 2002, including the Mildred N. Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1. Bac In Front, a half-sister to Checknbac, captured three stakes at Los Alamitos, including the 2015 La Primera Del Ano Derby-G3. Running Bac has also produced stakes-placed Walkin Bac, Smell Perfume, and Running Springs.
Rick Sumner’s homebred Candy Blood (Apollitical Blood-Ranch Candy) finished second. Raul Valenzuela rode the gelding for trainer Monty Arrossa. Candy Blood finished last year by winning the Holiday Handicap.
Monopolist (Favorite Cartel-Nymph), bred and owned by Dr. Ed Allred, ran third under jockey Oscar Andrade Jr. for trainer Jimmy Glenn. Monopolist won the 2020 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity-G2.
Completing the field were Twostrikesurprise (Favorite Cartel-Weownthenite), Doc Lamb (Tres Seis-Third Painted Sign), Leah Carroll (Hes Relentless-Viva La Blue), Coronado Kiss (Coronado Cartel-Sixteen Kisses), AP A Special Takeoff (Favorite Cartel-Jet Takeoff), and Gentleman Chuck (Favorite Cartel-Nymph). CM Dillingham Advice was scratched.
Flash Bak and Oscar Peinado return after their victory.
