Jess Good Candy: 2020 StallioneSearch Rising Star Sire
Jess Good Candy (Good Reason SA-Jess Send Candy, Mr Jess Perry) has been named the sec- ond recipient of the StallioneSearch Rising Star Sire Award after an outstanding Freshman Sire season that was capped off with Dulce Sin Tacha receiving the 2020 Champion 2 Year-Old-Colt title. His first crop of 2 year olds consisted of 20 winners, 7 blacktype, 1 Champion, earnings of $1,273,623, and average earnings per starter of over $19,900. His first crop Champion Dulce Sin Tacha SI 98 ($518,403) won the 2020 Texas Classic Futurity-G1. Jess Good Candy was bred by Carl Pevehouse and is standing the 2021 season at Lazy E Ranch.
Canterbury Releases 2021 Stakes Schedule
Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota, will offer 15 stakes and increased overnight purses for their 65-day mixed meet that starts on May 18, with the first Quarter Horse races set for May 31. The meet includes the $175,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity and the $100,000 Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby. Purses that were previously reduced due to COVID-19 will now surpass pre-pandemic levels. The track will also be hosting three Bank of America Regional Challenge Races, including the Canter- bury Park Distance Challenge, Canterbury Park Distaff Challenge-G3, and Canterbury Park Championship Challenge-G3.
AQHA Debuts QData
The 37-year-old Robin Glenn Pedigree (RGP) database has been rebranded and named QData, a department of the American Quarter Horse Association. AQHA purchased RGP in 2014, and has since produced new services such as combin- ing money paying events and AQHA points and awards, stallion marketing service QStallions, and sale catalog production. QData has become the leading resource for the American Quarter Horse pedigree and performance data, offering detailed money earning activity for all performance horse groups. “Thanks to the AQHA’s acquisition of RGP and vison for the database, the enhanced marketing, evaluation and promotional tools
that I dreamed of offering for decades are now available to horsemen and women,” said Robin Glenn, AQHA Director of data services.
Carly Peercy named APHA Director of Racing & PBRIP
The American Paint Horse Association has appointed Carly Peercy as the new Director of Racing and the Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program. Her role will be as an advocate for growth in the Paint Racing program. Carly has had a lifelong love for horses and has been involved in many different equine organizations such as 4-H, Barrel Buddies, Little Buckaroos, Weber State College Rodeo Team and the
National Reining Horse Association. Peercy has a bachelors in marketing from Weber State University with a focus on public relations. “I am honored to be a part of the APHA team. This truly allows me to combine my business experience with my passion for horses and I can’t wait to meet our Paint racing members at upcoming events.”
Jeff Blea Named CHRB Equine Medical Director The California Horse Racing Board recently appointed Dr. Jeff Blea as equine medical director in preparation for the retirement of Dr. Rick Arthur in July of 2021. Under a contract between the CHRB and the School of Veterinary Medicine
at the University of California-Davis, the equine medical director also serves as a member of the faculty. A joint panel of UC Davis and CHRB were involved in the selection process of Dr. Blea. For the last 28 years, Dr. Blea has been a racetrack practitioner in Southern California. His interest is in improving horse racing and equine health and welfare. He served as director of the Dolly Green Research Foundation and has been involved in
many other organizatiions and programs. “As Equine Medical Director, I look forward to work- ing with industry stakeholders in further advanc- ing the progressive transformation of horse racing in California with the emphasis on horse safety, welfare, and integrity,” Dr. Blea states.
Arizona Senate Bill to Legalize Historic Horse Racing
Horseman in Arizona are working on modern- izing gaming and wagering in their state. Senator David Gowan submitted Senate Bill 1794, which would authorize historic horse racing and po- tentially generate up to $140 million in new tax revenues, while providing needed support for Arizona’s Quarter Horse racing community. Supporters of the bill claim it will create 4,000 new jobs, over $300 million in capital invest- ments in Arizona Downs in Prescott Valley, and increase daily purses from $80,000 to $300,000 to help the state become an industry leader in the southwest. “By modernizing Arizona’s horse racing industry, we are well-positioned to be- come the premier destination for horse racing on the West Coast,” Sen. Gowan stated.
