SPEEDHORSE PHOTO ARCHIVE ANSWER
The photo on page 165 shows R. C. “Punch” Jones with Good Catch in 1982. Punch came from a ranching background and competed in bareback, saddle broncs, bull riding and bulldogging. Racing caught his eye during a trip to Las Cruces, New Mexico. Punch had his eye on a Thorough- bred filly Maroon, owned by Mary Pierce that she refused to sell. Pierce later gifted that filly to Suzanne Norton, who Punch married in 1953. The filly turned out to a very rewarding wedding gift for the couple, becoming their first broodmare. She set three New Track Records at Ruidoso Downs and two New Track Records at The Downs of Albuquerque. The Joneses had seven genera- tions of broodmares that traced back to that very important mare. Among their top runners were Rule The Deck, who earned more than $500,000 on the track, and her granddaughter Kuhi Kuhi became one of the top racing mares during that time. Punch served as director of the NMQHA and AQHA, where he was a member of both the racing and stud book and registration committees. He was also president of the New Mexico Horse Breeders Association. Along with being inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2008, Punch was also honored with the first Annual Southwest Cow- boy Celebration and was inducted into the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame. R. C. “Punch” Jones passed away in 2017.
