A Stakes-Winning Owner
Malon’s first stakes winner, the 1996 filly Extravagant Class, was by Hez Class and out of the First Down Dash daughter Quick N Dash. Extravagant Class won four of seven starts, running second twice and third once, and earned $21,543 in her sole year on the track. She ran third in the Pot O’Gold Futurity at Sun Downs, second in the Great Falls HRA Futurity, and then won the Charlie Russell Futurity-G3 in Kalispell.
The horses Malon considers his all-time top three include:
Juno Dat Royal Bug Bred by Abigail Kawananakoa, the 2000 Blushing Bug gelding out of Juno Dat Honor, by Juno Dat Cash, won 12 of 35 starts, with eight seconds and seven thirds, earning $62,056 in five years. The stakes winner finished 2006 84th by wins. “He ended up at Los Alamitos,” Malon says. “He was a good horse.” Junosnoking The 2006 stakes-winning geld- ing by This Snow Is Royal and out of Junos Pretty Girl, by Juno Dat Cash, was bred by
F. Vaughn Hoopes and earned 10 wins from 26 starts, with two seconds and one third. He
cashed $28,678 in checks during three years on the track, including finishing 2009 eighth by wins. “What a great horse he was,” Malon says. “He won every race after I bought him; he won six in a row, including two derbies and their trials [the Yellowstone Downs and the Portland Meadows Fall derbies]. He was what I consider a business horse — he had his issues, but when he got on the racetrack, he was all business!”
Electraglide Blue This distinctively colored 1994 gray filly by Dash For Cash son Judge Cash and out of Honeybug Gal, by the Jet Deck son Jet Edward, was bred by James Kenny in Idaho. Her four-year race career netted $21,827, with 12 wins, three seconds and nine thirds from 31 starts. “She was a great little filly I ran for a number of years,” Malon says. “She was a track record setter at Kennewick at 220, a tremendous little horse. Everybody loved her.”
“I’ve had a few others that set track records
in Montana and other places, that were great horses in their day. Back in the early part of my career, I had some pretty darn solid horses. These are Northwest horses; not Oklahoma,
Ruidoso or Los Alamitos horses,” Malon quali- fies, “but they were solid horses, nonetheless.
“I never hit the big stage like some of my friends, but I just had solid-knocking horses. That’s always been my forte; nothing fancy. But I always liked horses that when I entered them, people knew I was in the race. I’ve had lots of that kind of horse.”
His Current Field
Malon continues to keep about half a dozen horses in training or layup with his trainer, Benito Curiel, and Benito’s assistant, Denis Valdez, in Kennewick.
