Ruidoso Downs, Albertson’s Raise Funds For Food4Kids Program
Ruidoso Downs Race Track and Albertson’s Market held their annual food drive for Food 4 Kids Backpack Program on Aug. 13. The event raises money and food and delivers backpacks
to food insecure children in Lincoln County, New Mexico, with 100% going directly into the program. Donors were given Ruidoso Downs Race Track/Albertson’s Market lunch boxes as a gift, and the lunch boxes were also given away as a promotion at Ruidoso Downs on Aug. 21.
Retama Park To Race in 2022
Retama Park plans to return to racing in June of 2022. The San Antonio, Texas, track held their 2021 meet at Sam Houston Race Park after the winter storm in February damaged the facility, including the grandstand, barn area and racing offices.
Sam Thompson Memorial Foundation Fundraiser
The Sam Thompson Memorial Foundation is raising funds to benefit future recipients of the Sam Thompson Foundation Scholarship with
an ongoing “50/50” raffle and a silent auction held at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale Sept. 3-5. Money generated from the silent auction at this sale, as well as stallion service donations auc- tioned at the Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale, goes directly to fund scholarships. Since 2016, the foundation has given out over $250,000 in the form of 95 scholarships to 61 applicants from the horse racing industry to attend college.
Lone Star Refrigerator Handicap Now Invitational
The Grade 1 Refrigerator Handicap contested at Lone Star Park is now an invitational race for 2021, with invited runners competing at 440-yards with a purse of $200,000. Hair test- ing will be a requirement for invitees. “Lone Star Park decided to make the Refrigerator an invitational due to the ability to select the run- ners that will participate, as well as to outline the hair-testing policies that apply to the par- ticipants going into the Grade 1 event,” said the Executive VP of Racing of Lone Star Park and Remington Park. The 2021 Lone Star Park Quarter Horse meet begins Sept. 17 and runs through Dec. 18.
Proposed Nebraska Racino
The North Platte, Nebraska, Planning Commis- sion in July voted 6-0 to recommend approval of a conditional use permit for Prospect Enterprises LLC to sell 70+ acres of industrial-zoned land to North Platte Exposition and Racing Inc. to build a 5/8-mile oval racetrack offering Quarter Horse and eventually Thoroughbred racing. Nebraska City Council members will vote in mid-August on whether to clear the way for the horse track
and eventual 32,000-square-foot casino near In- terstate 80. If the Council approves the measure, licensing will be in the hands of the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission. Company President Brian Becker has also proposed a simi- lar track and casino near Gering, Nebraska. Both entities have applied for licenses, but neither are on the Commission’s September agenda. Devel- opment of the projects will be with help from Global Gaming Solutions LLC, which is owned by the Chickasaw Tribe on Oklahoma, owner of Remington Park and Lone Star Park.

Andrea Fappani, a top leading open rider in the National Reining Horse Association and one of two individuals to have earnings in excess of $6 million, hosts the international podcast “Along For The Ride with Andrea Fappani.” In August, AQHA Chief Executive Racing Officer Janet VanBebber was inter- viewed and shared her knowledge and love
of the Quarter Horse racing industry. Janet, the leading female Quarter Horse trainer by money earned, shared her experiences run- ning her own successful business and also touched on her involvement and work run- ning the AQHA racing department.
Indiana Grand Weiner Dog Race
Indiana Grand Racing & Casino on Aug. 14 offered special Hot Diggity Dog Weiner Dog Racing with 21 Dachshunds taking to the track in two trials and the final in which 10 dogs competed for $500 in prize money and the Champion title. The winner of the 50-yard dash was Rackley III, owned by Richard Rackley III, a three-time Weiner Dog competition victor who took home the $250 winner’s share and a special Weiner Dog trophy.

Sin Tacha (Jess Good Candy-Prissy Sin Tacha, Tempting Dash) will enter stud in 2022 at Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma, following the conclusion of his 2021 season. Racing for breed- ers/owners Bob and Jerry Gaston of Texas, the three-year-old colt is trained by Heath Taylor and has thus far earned $651,689 with seven wins from ten starts including the Texas Clas- sic Futurity-G1. Dulce Sin Tacha, who is a top three leading money earning two-year-old colt in 2020 and three-year-old colt in 2021, is the fastest qualifier going into the All American Invitational and he is eligible for the Texas Clas- sic Derby trials. The 2022 fee will be announced at a later time, but reservations are being ac- cepted for breedings now.
