Mr Kid Charge wins the 1971 All American Futurity.
MR KID CHARGE WINS THE 1971 ALL AMERICAN FUTURITY (400 YARDS)
in the Rainbow Futurity, set the fastest qualifying time in his trial with a time of :19.77. The Rainbow was the only blemish on his record and his trial win gave him five wins in six starts. Duplicate Bid, the Sun Country Futurity winner, had the second fastest
time, winning his trial in a time of :19.88. Anecdote, a multiple stakes winner, including the Golden State Futurity, Jet Deck Handicap and Bay Meadows Futurity, won her trial in
a time of :19.89. Some Kinda Man had won both his trials for the Kansas Futurity and the All American Futurity. He finished fifth in the Kansas Futurity finals. His trial time of :19.90 made him the fourth fastest qualifier. Mr
Jet Moore had won his trials for the Kansas Futurity, Rainbow Futurity and then he won his All American Futurity trial with the fifth fastest time of :19.92. He won the Kansas Futurity and was second in the Rainbow Futurity to Mr Kid Charge.
The interesting part is Mr Kid Charge had won the Rainbow over Mr Jet Moore in second and Come Six in seventh place. But they both went off as the co-favorites in the All American. Reports show that the finals was a roughly contested race. Come Six came out of the nine hole and bumped Some Kinda Man, forcing Some Kinda Man into Duplicate Bid. An inquiry was submitted but no action was taken. Then on the rail, Mr Jet Moore made a strange jump and then lugged in to hit the rail. He finished last after being pulled up.
When the gates opened, Mr Kid Charge and jockey Johnny Cox were on the lead from the beginning. They went wire-to-wire with a 1/2-length win over Come Six, who recovered from the early trouble to finish second. The long shot Savannah Swinger was third, Anecdote was fourth, Some Kinda Man was fifth and Duplicate Bid was sixth. The rest of the field in the order they finished were Try, Decka Rita, Story Man and Mr Jet Moore.
Mr Kid Charge earned $200,841 for his All American win and he got the win setting a 400 yard track and stakes record of :19.65. This is still the second fastest time for an All American run at 400 yards. The only horse to do it faster was Refrigerator in 1990. The All American Futurity was the final start
in 1971 for Mr Kid Charge. He amassed a record of 11 starts with seven firsts and four thirds, and his earnings for the year stood
at $268,398. His winning the Rainbow Futurity and the All American Futurity helped him earn the title of the AQHA Champion Two-Year-Old Colt.
His three-year-old campaign shows
that Mr Kid Charge went to the track 16 times with seven wins and three seconds.
He earned $26,273. He won two stakes in the Sunland Park Championship and C. L. Maddon’s Bright Eyes Handicap. He finished second in the Sunland Park Fall Derby and sixth in the Champion of Champions. He made four starts in 1973, with two wins and
Will F. Whitehead of Del Rio, Texas, bought Mr Kid Charge at the 1970 Ruidoso Yearling Sale for $4,100. He settled on
Mr Kid Charge because the colt he really wanted sold for more than he could afford. Whitehead told the press that he had bought the colt as an investment and that if he made the top 30 finalists for the All American, he would recoup his investment.
Mr Kid Charge was bred by A. B. Green of Purcell, Oklahoma. He was sired by Kid Meyers, the first AQHA Supreme Champion and a son of Three Bars out of World Champion Miss Meyers by Leo. The dam of Mr Kid Charge was Fancy Charge by Go Man Go and out of Marsh Light by Depth Charge.
Whitehead turned his investment over
to John Chapman for training. They started the colt in his first race in February and he finished third in a maiden race. He came back in an allowance for his first win and then he made three starts at three different tracks, running third in all three races at La Bahia Downs, Sonora Park and Ruidoso Downs. His next wins came in two allowance races at Ruidoso Downs. He made his next start in his Rainbow Futurity trial that he won. Then he won the Rainbow Futurity, earning $63,989 for first place to give him four consecutive wins going into the All American.
The trials for the All American Futurity were held on August 27, with Mr Kid Charge winning his trial in :19.93. He had the sixth fastest time. Come Six, who had run seventh
