The $929,226 All American Derby-G1, Quarter Horse racing’s richest race for three year olds, will be contested on Sept. 5. On August 22, eight trials were held to narrow the field down to the 10 finalists. There was a steady-4-6 mph cross wind, temperatures were in the 70’s, the skies were cloudy, and the track started out as fast. By the third trial, it
was raining but the track was deemed fast. It was wet-fast for the fifth heat and sloppy-sealed by the sixth. Four horses qualified in these less-than ideal conditions, with the other six coming from the previous heats. All 10 to qualify are geld- ings. The finals see Bobby D. Cox as the breeder of three qualifiers, including the fastest. Cox also owns two of his three qualifiers in Shott Gun and Jettz. Second fastest qualifier Empressum is a homebred for Jeff Jones and Steve Holt, and Jerry Windham homebred Mister Illusion, while breeders Marc and Cole Jungers co-own their qualifier Flash Riley with others. Trainer Heath Taylor has three going to the finals in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th qualifiers, and jockey Rodrigo Vallejo was aboard all of those. Trainer Monty Arrossa has two in the finals and Jesus Ayala rode both of them. Jockey Francisco Calderon also qualified two to choose from for the finals. Sires Apollitical Jess and Tempting Dash both have two quali- fiers in the finals. An interesting thing about this year’s All American Derby field is that the fastest qualifier, Instygator, and the fourth fastest qualifier, Shott Gun, both bred by Bobby D. Cox, are out of the same mare - Eye Popping, a stakes- placed winner herself.
