by Michael Cusortelli
“There is just nothing like watching a horse run; there’s the crowd, and there’s
the excitement from everyone involved. Horses are a passion of mine.”
Susie Prather of Hobbs, New Mexico, is currently serving her first two-year term on the New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association board of trustees.
Susie is the owner and operator of Doubletree Farm in Hobbs, one of New Mexico’s leading Thoroughbred breeding farms. Opened in 2001, 160-acre farm offers year-round boarding, foaling, and breeding
services. Ninety of its acres are dedicated the growing of alfalfa, beardless winter wheat and beardless triticale.
According to its website, Doubletree stands four Thoroughbred stallions -- Abstraction, a stakes-winning and Grade 3-placed son of the A.P. Indy stallion Pulpit; Rule By Night, a multiple stakes winning Malibu Moon stallion; Comfort, a stakes-
winning son of Indian Charlie who ran second in Frosted’s 2016 Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga; and American Pepper, an unraced son of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.
Abstraction entered stud in 2015. Since then, he has become one of New Mexico’s most prominent Thoroughbred sires, as
his 82 starters have earned more than $2.7 million from five crops. Abstraction’s progeny includes multiple stakes winner Hustle Up and 2019 New Mexico State Fair Thoroughbred Futurity (R) winner Evacuee.
American Pepper’s first foals have yet to
hit the racetrack, but the 4-year-old Kentucky- bred colt is the son of Peppers Pride, a New Mexico-bred daughter of the Fappiano stallion Desert God who made national headlines when she won all 19 of her races -- including 14 stakes -- from 2005-08.
Doubletree is also home to more than 70 broodmares.
Susie’s late husband, Steve, also served on the NMHBA board of trustees; a race named
