BELLA DONA
Facing older fillies and mares for the first time, Bella Dona romped to a 4 1/4-length victory in the August 7, $50,000 Lincoln Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred distaffers at Ruidoso Downs.
Bella Dona covered 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:02.80 under jockey Luis Fuentes. Simon Buechler prepped the 3-year-old bay daughter of Attila’s Storm for owners Robert M. Driggers, Del Rae Driggers and Ben Lee Ivey.
Bella Dona was making her first start since March 27, when the filly scored a 3 3/4-length win in the 1 1/16-mile, $250,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks (R) for state-bred sophomore fillies at Sunland Park. The filly was bred by Robert Driggers and Del Rae Driggers, and she is one of 27 stakes winners from 265 starters sired by Attila’s Storm, a Kentucky-bred son of the Storm Cat stallion Forest Wildcat.
Raced from 2004-07, Attila’s Storm earned $534,983 from 18 starts and won the ‘07 Toboggan Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct. The stallion has sired the earners of more than $16.8 million from 12 crops, including
multiple stakes winners Waltzing Attila and Stormin The Jewels.
Bella Dona is also one of five winners from as many starters produced by Charlotte’s Drone, an unplaced daughter of B.G.’s Drone. A 2005 foal, Charlotte’s Drone has foaled two other stakes winners: Tilla Cat, a full sister to Bella Dona who won three stakes in New Mexico from 2016-18, and Lariat, a half-brother to Bella Dona who won the 2020 New Mexico Cup Derby Championship (R) at Zia Park.
Bella Dona’s second dam, the Tilt The Odds mare Charlotte’s Ego, won four stakes from 1997-2001, including the 2001 New Mexico Distaff Handicap (R) at SunRay
Park. The filly’s fourth dam, the Crimson Falcon mare Fanny Falcon, won the 1981 New Mexican Stakes at The Downs at Santa Fe.
Bella Dona was winning for the ninth time in 10 outs, and the $30,000 winner’s share of the purse from her seventh career stakes score bumped the filly’s earnings to $585,068.
Band Of Glory finished second and was followed by Tutta Terlingua, Marking
Time, Proofsinthepuddin, Destiny Who and Marilyn Moneyroll.
Band Of Glory banked $10,000 for her owner, Bob Matley. A $10,000 claimer earlier in the Ruidoso meet, the 4-year-old Roll Hennessy Roll filly has won two of 20 races and has earned $51,909.
Tutta Terlingua is a gray or roan 5-year-
old Stellar Rain mare campaigned by Hever Yanez. Tutta Terlingua has won six of 31 starts, and the $5,000 third-place share of the purse brought her bankroll to $142,025.
Runner-up Keen Cat is a Kentucky-bred Keen Ice gelding racing for Greg Green, MCM Stables LLC, and Corie O’Connor. A $21,000 yearling purchase at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Keen Cat has won three of 11 outs and has banked $83,619.
Pepper Spray is a homebred Tale Of Ekati gelding campaigned by Roys Mansur. Pepper
Spray has won four of eight races -- including
two stakes -- and he has earned $193,050, and his record includes a third-place finish in the March 27, $500,000 Sunland Derby (G3) at Sunland Park.

DIABOLICAL STORM
Making his first start against open stakes company, Diabolical Storm held on at the wire to win the July 30, 6-furlong Duke City Sprint Stakes for 3-year-olds at Albuquerque Downs.
Diabolical Storm defeated Keen Cat by a nose in 1:10.42. Alfredo Juarez Jr. rode the homebred gray or roan son of Attila’s Storm for owners Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant and Derrol Hubbard, and trainer Todd Fincher.
Diabolical Storm was bred in New Mexico, and he was coming off of a second-place finish, three- quarters of a length behind winner Corrina Corrina, in the May 29, 6 1/2-furlong Dine Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred sophomores at SunRay Park. The gelding is one of 27 stakes winners sired by Attila’s Storm, a Grade 3-winning and Grade 1-placed son of the Storm Cat stallion Forest Wildcat.
From 12 crops, Attila’s Storm has sired the earners of more than $16.5 million, including multiple New Mexico-bred stakes winners Go For A Stroll, Thermal and Hush’s Storm. The stallion died following colic surgery in June 2021.
Diabolical Storm is also one of two starters foaled by Diabolical Dame, a 10-year-old
daughter of the Artax stallion Diabolical. Racing primarily in New Mexico -- with one start in California -- Diabolical Dame earned $696,480 from 26 outs and won 10 stakes, including the 2016 and 2017 New Mexico Cup Distaff Sprint Championship (R) at Zia Park.
Diabolical Storm’s second dam, the Devon Lane mare Vipervapor, won the 2003 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding traces back to his fourth dam, Aveshur, a winning Kentucky- bred daughter of New Policy who produced Sharm A Sheikh, a stakes winner at Del Mar in 1974 and the runner-up in that year’s Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes (G3) at Arlington Park.
All told, Diabolical Storm has won four of seven races and has earned $252,100. His season record includes a half-length victory in the 1 1/16-mile, $250,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby (R) at Sunland Park on March 27.
Pepper Spray finished third and was followed by Rome, Silverbullitbadger, Groovy Huey, Creative Bid and Big Skipper.
