to EIPH. The study will be funded through an emergent need grant from the AQH Foundation. Understand that it will take time to deploy and gather results. However, even if not expedient, having verifiable data to substantiate the need for Lasix to protect our Quarter Horses is critical.
Another important issue addressed in the Rac- ing Council’s meeting was to amend the AQHA Awards and Media Policy to include Class 1, 2, and 3 medication violations. (Formerly, the policy included Class 1 and 2. After polling the entire Racing Committee, the responses reflected an overwhelming majority was strongly in favor of this change.) The policy was further amended to strike the reference to the Controlled Therapeutics List (whereby any violation for a medication not referenced on the Controlled Therapeutic List resulted in the horse/trainer/trainer’s associated horses being placed on our list of ineligibles) and instead use the Uniform Classification Guidelines for Foreign Substances and Recommended Penal- ties, and include Class A and B in our policy. Do- ing so better represents the intent of the policy to exclude those using performance enhancing drugs from AQHA awards and media. The full policy can be found on the AQHA website: https://www. aqha.com/aqha-racing-disciplinary-actions.
Related to the AQHA Awards and Media Policy, there was discussion during the meeting about whether we should be affording trainers and horses who are on this list the opportunity to participate in the AQHA Racing Challenge races. I was instructed to draft a proposed change to the Challenge Conditions so that they reflect consistency with our policy and present
it to the Council at their next meeting. The amendment should reflect that horses may not be entered into an AQHA Challenge race under the care of a trainer who is listed on the policy. Additionally, horses that are on the Awards
and Media list are not eligible for entry into
the AQHA Challenge races. If approved, the changes will be implemented for 2021.
AQHA Racing Council Summer Meeting
I will be very busy over the next few weeks – I hope to see you at the Heritage Place Sale, and that it shows the same strength in numbers that the other yearling sales have done. We will have AQHA’s On-Site Service at our booth, with a pro- tocol established so that people aren’t waiting in the long lines that we have experienced in recent years. We love that you bring your work to us and afford our staff an opportunity to serve you.
My next trip after the Heritage Place Sale will be to Lone Star Park for their Regional Challenge Distance Championship. Then, it will only be a couple weeks after that and it will be time to head to Albuquerque. If you will be at any of these events, please say “Hello!” I do enjoy the opportu- nity to visit. As we travel, please pray for my safety, and know that I will be praying for yours.
