                IN MEMORIAM

The New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association would like to extend our deepest condolences to Debra Laney whose beloved husband Stacy has passed away recently. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Rhonda J Hathorn Jan. 16, 1955 – Dec. 16, 2021
It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish. Family and friends must say goodbye to their beloved Rhonda J Hathorn of Veguita, New Mexico, who passed away at the age of 66, on December 16, 2021.
Janice Ann Ashbaugh July 30, 1941 – February 6, 2022
The most happy lady around, Janice Ann Ashbaugh passed away on February 6, 2022 at 80 years of age. She was born to Michael and Anna (Staph) Sablich on July 30, 1941 in Duquesne PA. She married the love of her life, Richard
Earl Ashbaugh on September 6, 1960 and celebrated 61 years of marriage. They moved to Albuquerque New Mexico, where she tended to the home, Richard and raising her four daughters.
As time went on, they moved to Estancia Valley where they bought a farm, grew wheat, raised Angus cattle and for the last 37 years they bred, raised, trained and raced Thoroughbred racehorses. Janice loved going to all the school activities to watch her girls and grandchildren and also to watch their horses run.
As “empty nest” syndrome set in with only one daughter at home, she started to sell Avon and sold it for 30+ years. She met a lot of
people and made many lifetime friends. She attended the Moriarty Church of Christ. She was a member of the McIntosh Community Center, where she held many officer positions. She became the president and loved having Halloween carnivals, Easter egg hunts and Christmas parties with Santa for the community. She helped in organizing the monthly breakfast and made the BEST green chili in this world! Janice always had a smile on her face and had
a sweet laugh. She made everyone feel special and loved. Her weekly fun was playing bingo every Tuesday night. Sometimes she would win and sometimes she would lose, but that didn’t stop her from going! Janice attended the silver sneakers exercise group in Moriarty for many years. She loved exercising! Janice was always
so healthy and did everything she could to be healthy but during the last couple of years that became harder. All that knew her will miss her!
J. Cole Jungers 1941-2022
A memorial service for J. Cole Jungers, 81, who passed away on February 8 in Hempstead, Texas, was held at Klein Funeral Home in Tomball, Texas. A prominent horseman in the 1970s, Jungers was the agent for the Kentucky-based Julia Rhea Ranch (Chet and Julia Rhea Badger) on the sale of Hanks Azure Doll, an Azure Te filly out of Champion Hanks Dial Doll, to Gerald and Petie Blue to top the 1976 All American Yearling Sale. The Blues paid $87,000 for Hanks Azure Doll, whose dam was the 1969 Champion Three-Year-Old Filly whose wins included the Kansas Derby, West
Texas Derby, Live Oak Derby and Alamo Quarter Horse Breeders Association Derby. One of the five children of Dolphie and Mildred Jungers, Cole was born in 1941 in Johnson County, Illinois. A student of horse pedigrees, Cole was involved in the original syndication of Dash For Cash, in the sale of Champion Little Blue Sheep and in the sale of Duncan Farms (site of the filming of DALLAS in the 1970s) in Plano, Texas. In recent years, the retired Jungers was a partner in 2020 Rainbow Futurity finalist Wryker and 2021 All American Derby finalist Flash Riley. His son Marc trained both of those horses. Jungers is survived his sons Marc (Michelle) and Chad Jungers and daughter Kathy (Orin) Naramore plus 12 grandchildren.
  Remember, you
can start the NMHBA registration process the day your foal is born! You DO NOT need to wait until you receive the QH or
TB certificates. But remember the horse is not an official New Mexico Bred until the certificates have been finalized.
