2024 SPEEDHORSE BARREL STALLION REGISTER
The cover of this year’s 2024 Speedhorse Barrel Stallion Register celebrates the versatile stallion Slick By Design, aka Slick. The 2007 black stallion has proven himself through his progeny in the barrel arena.
Allene Tatom bred Slick By Design out of Dreams Of Blue, the 2004 Barrel Blast May Day 1 Open 1D Champion and 2004 NBHA Texas State Barrel Open 1D Reserve Champion.
Slick By Design entered the futurity arena in 2011 under rider Kim Ulbricht Grunkemeyer. That year, he won the BFA Spring Classic Slot Futurity, among others, and was named Barrel Racing Report’s Barrel Horse of the Year 4-Year-Old Stallion. In 2012, he was shown by Jennifer Sharp and was named AQHA World Champion Junior Barrel Racing Horse.
“When he was growing up, I spent a lot of time with him. When he was a baby, I kept telling him he was special,” said breeder Allene Tatom to Larry Thornton in our Speedlines feature. She ended the interview stating, “...he was just meant to be.”
Also in 2012, Charlie Cole & Jason Martin of Highpoint Performance Horse in Pilot Point, Texas purchased the stallion. It was under this ownership that Slick became a four- time National Finals Rodeo qualifier.
Jason Martin told Larry Thornton, “We were at the world show and Charlie (Cole) was watching the barrel racing. He came back to the hotel and he said that this black stud

came in and won the go round and he had never seen him before. The next day, he called me and said, ‘That black stud just won the world,’ and so I said, ‘Why don’t you see if they will sell him.’ And that was how that process got started and we bought him.”
Slick By Design, who finished fourth in the Wrangler NFR his last year of barrel racing in 2018, earned a total of $643,000.
Slick’s first barrel foals were foaled in 2016
and he is now the #9 All-Time Leading Barrel Sire and the #2 Leading 2023 Barrel Futurity Sire with current year earnings of $453,223. Two of his performers are on the Top 10 List of 2023 Futurity Horses - #5 Hyper By Design and #10 Slick Swingin Gypsy. He has sired 100% Money Earners from 368 performers with nearly $5.5 million in barrel progeny earnings. His top earner is 2023 barrel performer Slicks Lil Amigo with $290,631.
In 2021 and 2022, Slick proved himself as a sire in the roping pen with Probably By Design winning the 2021 Farnam AQHA World Champion in the Non-Pro Senior Heading and the 2022 Reserve World Title in the Junior Heading. Freckled By Design scored a fourth place finish in the main average and second in the 4-year-old incentive at the 2021 Royal Crown.
Slick By Design is by Designer Red, who was
a stakes qualifier in the 1997 Speedhorse Sprint Futurity-RG3. He is a barrel sire with progeny earnings of over $2.6 million. Slick By Design is his top barrel earner, followed by 2023 barrel performer Bully By Design with $270,373 in earnings.
