“The second miscarriage of justice is the need for pari-mutuel wagering in the areas like Texas and Oklahoma, where the population could support Quarter Horse racing. This would bring revenue to these states and give the horsemen larger purses. Under the pari- mutuel system, where racing is governed and controlled, I feel it’s the greatest form of sports and recreation available to the public.”
James’ pet peeve is that, “Trainers don’t get the recognition they deserve. There are jockey and owner awards, but usually they forget who actually conditions the horses.”
Bill adds, “The trainer does all the work in getting a horse up to a race and if he wins, the jock is given the credit for a good ride.”
But regardless of these annoyances, the McArthurs have found their niche in life. Each loves his work and is striving to improve his talents and enhance his reputation.
The Quarter Horse industry provides the arena in which to compete and demonstrate the skills, where the primary goal is to be a winner.
For a McArthur, however, there is a secondary goal: To be related to a winner.
