Moonist Handicap
ZOOMIN FOR SPUDS
by Michael Compton
Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding of 2016, Zoomin For Spuds scored his first stakes win since tak- ing the 2016 Champion of Champions-G1 when he
defeated a small, but competitive field in the $27,500 Moonist Handicap at Los Alamitos on March 25. Under Jesus Ayala, Zoomin For Spuds broke
on top and ran powerfully through the lane to post an impressive wire-to-wire 1-length score over race favorite BH Lisas Boy. Zoomin For Spuds turned the tables on that rival in this race after losing by a neck to BH Lisas Boy in the Brad McKinzie Winter Championship-G1 on Feb. 11.
Scoring his first win of the year from three starts, Zoomin For Spuds stopped the timer in :19.587, earning a 97 speed index. Trainer Monte Arossa indicated that the trials to the Grade 1 Vessels Maturity in June are up next for the gelding.
In scoring his 10th lifetime victory and registering his eighth stakes win, Zoomin For Spuds improved his record to a stellar 28-10(8)-10(2)-6(3) for owner/ breeder Jim Walker. The $15,125 winner’s share of the purse boosted his career bankroll to $573,281.
Zoomin For Spuds is the top earner out of winner A Perfect Cocktail. She has produced 100% winners/blacktype from four starters, including additional stakes winners Bux For Cocktail and Jesses Perfect One as well as stakes-placed winner Doing Trix.
Cesar DeAlba piloted the runner-up BH Lisas Boy (Mighty Invictus-Apollo Snowbound) for owner/trainer Bill Hoburg. LD is Back (Walk Thru Fire-Prima Ld) and jockey Eduardo Nicasio finished third for owner Darling Farms who co-owns the 4-year-old gelding with trainer Jaime Gomez. One Proud Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Guy Chasing), Mr Apollitical Dash (Mr Jess Perry-Apollitical Dash) and Racy High Roller (One Famous Eagle-First Down Racy) completed the order of finish.

Designs By Dynasty soared to her first stakes victory in the $18,000 Terrific Energy Handicap at Los Alamitos on March 3.
The 4-year-old filly broke on top and never let any rivals get close. With Eduardo Nicasio aboard, Designs By Dynasty ultimately won by 1 1/4-lengths in :17.402 to tie her career high 101 speed index.
Carlos Avalos owns Designs By Dynasty, and trainer Yanet Rodriguez explained that Avalos acquired the filly privately about a month before the stakes. Last year, Designs By Dynasty finished third in the Rebs Little Lulu Handicap and was a finalist in the Golden State Derby-G2.

EG High Desert Farms’ homebred Jess Hawk (One Sweet Jess-Merridoc Hawk) finished 2nd with Cruz Mendez in the irons. Lorenzo Campuzano trains the 4-year-old filly, who won the 2016 Pat Hyland Memorial Handicap.
