I caught up with a few barrel racers recently to check in on their Paint Horses. These ladies purchased “off the track” horses and have given them new jobs in the barrel racing world through APHA’s Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program (PBRIP).
Tiffany Larson lives in Northern Minnesota.
Q.How did you find your Paint Horse?
A. I told a friend I was looking for a flashy, running-bred filly to add to my horse herd. She found a filly named Miss Hollywood Royal, a.k.a. “Blanche.” She came from Wright Farms in Coweta, Oklahoma. I had her shipped to Minnesota, and Blanche has become an all-weather horse.
Q.Have you trained Blanche yourself?
A. I sent her to a colt starter for 30 days. I’ve been training her at home since.
Q.What do you like best about your Paint?
A. Blanche has a great attitude and is very gentle. She is so gentle in fact, that my fiancé recently caught Blanche and attempted to take a selfie while sitting on her bareback. He does not ride horses and does not even know how to halter a horse. He slid off her back end, and Blanche just stood looking at him.
Q.Would you purchase another Paint fresh off of the track?
A. Yes, I have always had a soft spot for Paints since my uncle raised them when I was a kid.
Q.Do you have an active PBRIP program in your area?
A. The PBRIP program is growing in Minnesota. SC Productions has recently started a PBRIP addition to their races.
 Jordan Robinson lives in Oklahoma.
Q.How did you find your Paint Horse?
A. I live in Oklahoma and train futurity horses. That’s how I heard about Jane Of The Jungle.
Q.From whom did you purchase your Paint?
A. I purchased Jane from Ray Enlow as a 4 year old.
Q.Have you trained Jane yourself?
A. Ray’s grandson, Gunner, had started riding Jane after she finished her racing career. I have taken it from there.
Q.What do you like best about your Paint?
A. Jane prefers an O Ring bit and will not accept another kind. She is gritty and loves her job. She is very level-headed and almost floats when you bring her down the alley.
Q.Would you purchase another Paint fresh off of the track?
A. Yes, in addition to Jane, I own another Paint named Gun Smokin Indian or “Chief.”
Q.Do you have an active PBRIP program in your area?
A. Yes, I found out about the PBRIP program from veteran PBRIP participant Teresa Watson. We have won some good money with the PBRIP pots at barrel races about every weekend.
 Katie Hunt-Mullins lives in Mississippi.
Q.How did you find your Paint Horse?
A. Matt Whitekiller let me know he had Mighty Miss Judy available, and I bought her as a 3 year old.
Q.Have you trained Judy yourself?
A. Yes, and she is doing very well.
Q.What do you like best about your Paint?
A. I have never had any issues with them, and they have all been good- minded and willing. I love them because they have seen and done a lot already. That prepares them for big sites in the future.
I have also trained Turnpike Country, out of Country Quick Dash. He was also purchased from Matt. I trained him and sold him to a barrel racer in Canada. They are currently winning tons of 300+ entry barrel races all over Canada in the 1D group.
Q.Would you purchase another Paint fresh off of the track?
A. Yes, in fact, I have purchased five over the last few years.
Q.Do you have an active PBRIP program in your area?
A. It is growing. After I joined APHA, I was mailed information about PBRIP and I immediately joined.
The PBRIP program is growing each year. If you don’t know if you have one in your area, check out the PBRIP tab on the APHA website: apha.com/pbrip.
