The dam of Herod was Cypron by Blaze
by Flying Childers by Darley Arabian. Flying Childers was out of Betty Leedes by Old Careless by Spanker. If we accept the historical pedigree of Cream Cheeks, the dam of Betty Leedes, we see her sire to be Leedes Arabian and her dam was by Spanker, whose dam was the Old Morocco Mare. Cypron was out of Salome by Bethell’s Arabian and her dam was the Champion Mare by Graham’s Champion by Harpham Arabian. The dam of the Graham’s Champion was a Hautboy mare by Hautboy. The dam of the Champion Mare is a Darley Arabian Mare

Matchem, foaled in 1748, was sired by Cade by the Godolphin Arabian. The dam of Cade is Roxana by Bald Galloway by St. Victors Barb. The dam of Bald Galloway is Grey Whynot by Whynot and out of a Royal Mare. Whynot was sired by Fenwick Barb and out of a Royal Mare.
The dam of Matchem is Sister 2 To
Miss Partner by Croft’s Partner by Jigg by Byerley Turk. Jigg was out of a Spanker mare, although her actual pedigree has not been documented. Sister 2 To Miss Partner was out of Brown Farewell by Makeless by Oglethorpe Arabian by D’Arcy’s Yellow Turk. The dam

The dam of Squirt was Sister To Old Country Wench by Snake, who was sired
by Lister Turk and out of a Hautboy mare by Hautboy. The dam of Sister To Old Country Wench was Grey Wilkes by Hautboy and she was out of Miss D’Arcy’s Pet Mare.

Spilletta was the dam of Eclipse and she was sired by Regulus by the Godolphin Arabian and out of Grey Robinson by Bald Galloway. Grey Robinson is out of Sister To Old Country Wench. This gives Eclipse a 3 X 4 breeding pattern to Sister To Old Country Wench. The dam of Spilletta was Mother Western by Easby Snake by
Snake. This gives Eclipse a breeding pattern of 4X5X4toSnakebyListerTurkandoutofa Hautboy Mare by Hautboy. Spilletta was out of Mother Western out of the Old Montagu Mare by D’Arcy’s Old Montagu, and Old Montagu Mare is out of a Hautboy Mare by Hautboy and Hautboy was sired by D’Arcy’s White Turk and out of a Royal Mare. Now let’s look at Steel Dust and his ties to the three speed lines that the Thoroughbred developed from and how they influenced the American Quarter Horse. Steel Dust was sired
by Harry Bluff by Short’s Whip by Kentucky Whip, aka Blackburn’s Whip and Cook’s Whip. Kentucky Whip was sired by Whip by Saltram by Eclipse. The dam of Eclipse was Spilletta by Regulus. The dam of Saltram is Virago by Snap and out of a Regulus Mare by Regulus. This gives Saltram a breeding pattern of 3 X 3 to Regulus. The dam of Whip was a mare by Herod. Her dam was an Oroonoko Mare by Oroonoko. Oroonoko was sired by Crab and out of Miss Slamerkin. This makes Oroonoko a full brother to the Crab mare in Virago’s pedigree. Crab was sired by Alcocks Arabian, who was sired by Curwen’s Bay Barb and out of Old Wen Mare by Hautboy and she was out of Miss D’Arcy’s Pet Mare. The dam of Crab was Sister To Soreheels by Basto. Big Nance, or Big Nancy as she is listed in the pedigrees not extended of the American Stud Book, was the dam of Harry Bluff. She was sired by Jackson by Timoleon by Sir Archy. Timoleon was out of a mare by Saltram. The dam of Jackson was a mare by Kentucky Whip by Whip by Saltram. This gives Harry Bluff a breeding pattern of 4 X 5 X 6 to Saltram.
The dam of Big Nance was a mare whose pedigree is unknown. The American Stud Book indicates that the dam of Big Nancy was a Gallatin mare by Longstreets Gallatin by Gallatin by Bedford. The dam of Longstreets Gallatin is a Buzzard Mare by Buzzard. Buzzard was the sire of Selmin, who sired Sultan, the sire of Glencoe - an important part of the pedigrees of Peter McCue and Domino.
Buzzard was imported to America in 1805 and he became an important sire. He was sired by Woodpecker by Herod. The dam
of Woodpecker was Miss Ramsden by Cade by Godolphin Arabian. Buzzard’s dam was Misfortune by Dux by Matchem by Cade and she was out of Curiosity by Snap. The dam of Curiosity was a Regulus mare by Regulus. The dam of Steel Dust is a mare of Thoroughbred type, but her pedigree is unknown.
We have only shown a part of the story about how the American Quarter Horse became a breed. It is the part of the story that shows the common bond between the Thoroughbred and the American Quarter Horse. And now you know that it all began simultaneously with the beginning of the Thoroughbred and the blood the two breeds share today.
Below is an old reversed tin-type, the only known photo of Steel Dust, who ties to all three speed lines that the Thoroughbred developed from, and who had a great influence on the American Quarter Horse.
