(www.thestfoundation.org), which assists disabled jockeys and awards scholarships to youth whose families are involved in the racing industry.
After graduating from high school in Elgin, Texas, Mindy attended Texas State University, where she earned a degree in Business Management and a minor in Marketing. Since 2006, Mindy has worked as a senior loan officer for Mortgage Pros, a Texas-based company specializing in mortgage lending.
“After I graduated from college, I started a small retail business, but in 2006 I decided to switch gears and become a mortgage banker,” Mindy says. “I love helping people achieve their dream of home ownership.”
Mindy recently visited with our magazine for an interview.
Mindy McArthur of Austin, Texas, was elected to her first term on the New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association board of trustees in January.
Mindy’s roots in the Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racing industries run deep, as her parents, James and Donna McArthur, train both breeds. In fact, her parents are the only husband- and-wife combination to train winners of the
All American Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs, Quarter Horse racing’s richest and most prestigious race. James has won the All American twice, with Easy Date in 1974 and Eastex in ’84. Donna won the 1997 All American Futurity with Corona Cash.
“I grew up on the racetrack watching both of my parents train horses,” Mindy says. “My dad trained mainly in California when I was little,
and we moved to Texas when the pari-mutuel legislation passed there. But we always spent our summers in Ruidoso Downs. My parents actually met in Ruidoso in the 1970s, and between the two of them they’ve had a stable there every summer since then.
“I grew up surrounded by iconic racehorses that shaped my love and respect for the industry,” she adds.
Mindy has also made a name for herself in racing circles. During the American Quarter Horse Association’s Champion ceremony in Oklahoma City on January 17, she and Laura Joiner of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, were honored by the AQHA Racing Council with a Special Recognition Award. The two spearhead the efforts of the Sam Thompson Memorial Foundation
