in the house if you wanted.” Well....maybe not quite that good.
Some people may think seven starts for a two- year-old filly is borderline too much but, according to Joiner, that previously mentioned soundness is what allowed him to fill her dance card.
“She stayed in such good shape that we were able to spread out those seven starts,” he explained. “She’s honest and she enjoys her job. That really means a lot because, for one thing, we never need to push her. She knows what’s expected of her, and it’s truly her pleasure to provide.
“She’s a tiny little thing; long but small. I look at her sometimes and wonder how that huge heart of hers fits into her chest.”
Two Wines is by Jesse James Jr, a pride and joy of MJ. Unfortunately, he fought laminitis for the entire year prior to his death. “He’d seem to get better and then he’d relapse,” said Mac. “Finally, we decided we just couldn’t do it to him anymore. He’d been so good to us. Actually, it was Jesse James and Dash Ta Fame that made our farm.”
This circle is so fascinating! Look at the bottom of the pedigree. Once again, you see pure MJ Farms. This time, it begins way back at the first arc with the 1967 Miss Moolah Bar, in foal to the little known Thoroughbred Zevi. Not only was he little known, but the baby wasn’t due until July. Nothing about this deal was good.
Janis was a vet. She knew about intentionally aborting foals, which is precisely what she thought she was doing when she hit Miss Moolah Bar with a dose of synchrocept. It should have worked, but it didn’t. So, when
the 1978 baby was born, she was christened Synchrocept as a tribute to the failed drug.
We’re told all things happen for a reason and that was definitely the case with Syncrocept. She scored
a 106 si, a 4-1-2 record and $34,522 which was a fortune in 1981. She also produced Dashin Sandy in 1990, who ground out a bruising 17 starts, a 107 si and $103,171. It was Dashin Sandy who produced Champagne Lane, who ran out more than $147,125.
Jesse James Jr showcased his own stellar lineage. He was by the dapper Mr Jess Perry (by Streakin La Jolla by Streakin Six by Easy Six) who earned more than $687,000. The dam of Jesse James Jr was Loose Lips, a 1990 daughter of First Down Dash.
The Joiner family’s circle is currently very comfortable but no one is opposed to possibly adding a few more arcs.

PERCYJONES
(Jesse James Jr-Maggies Miracle LX, Dean Miracle) Bred by: Benny Smith
Owned by: Terry and Irene Stennett
Trained by: Trey Wood
2017: 5 3-1-1 $163,568 1st - Zia Derby (RG2)
Trainer Trey Wood is an important connecting arc in yet another circle. For starters, both his grandfather Leo and his father Blane were extremely successful trainers, with Blane still going strong. As my American Indian friend said, this
is truly a beautiful illustration of one generation imparting wisdom to the next generation.
Notice, please, the sire of Percyjones - Jesse James Jr so, once again, we come full circle to MJ Farms.
There’s more.
Remember how, early on in this article, we noted the consistency inherent in a circle? The same cross that produced Percyjones – Jesse James Jr-Maggies Miracle LX, Dean Miracle – also produced full sister Datona Doll in 2013 and full brother Hy Ho Harvey in 2015. All three were in the Wood’s barn.
Datona Doll won the New Mexico Classic Derby (RG2), was 2nd in the Zia Derby (RG2) and third in the Heritage Place Derby (G2) in open company. The filly never failed to light the board in eight starts.
Percyjones hit the ground in 2014. He
won the Zia Derby(RG2), was second in the Mountain Top Futurity, third in the By By JJ Stakes and third in both the Grade 1 Texas Classic Futurity and Derby against tough open competition. His 6-2-3 record puts his name on the board in all 11 career starts.
Hy Ho Harvey followed his two siblings in 2015, with six starts in his freshman season. He was third in the Zia Futuriity(RG1), with a record that’s just one tick off his brother and sister since he failed to nail the board in one of his six starts.
“It’s just a great cross that produces both speed and heart in horses that can be successful in both open and breed competition. That
gives tremendous flexibility. They’re also honest horses. It makes no difference where or when they run, the time of the day or the name of the
track. It’s all the same to them. Horses like these don’t come around very often.
“Percyjones is really exceptional. He’s a small horse who gives all he’s got every time he leaves the gate. I can always count on him for that kind of performance. The only time he might hit a snag is if he messes up leaving. Then, if he does, he comes running as hard as he can on the end. He never quits. I plan to run him five or six times this season, with two open races at Remington. They’ll be spaced out because he prefers to run fresh.
Wood has trained for the Stennetts the past six years. They’re tremendous supporters of not just the Wood team but of the entire industry as well. Percyjones was purchased through the New Mexico Bred Sale but, for the most part, the Stennetts are breeding their own runners these days.
“We’ve definitely been lucky,” said
Terry. “We have 10 good mares and are in a position to breed our own. That’s quite an accomplishment for us, especially since this is our second time in the business.
“We had four kids the first time we were in and decided we couldn’t afford four kids plus horses. Also, the economy was pretty bad. We were out 23 years, then came back in 2007. There were all kinds of changes during those 23 years. It’s still a fun game but a different kind of fun. We have a good group of friends and we intend to continue expanding our involvement.”
Circles can always handle inflation.
