SIPPIN
R.D. Hubbard’s Sippin, a 4-year-old home- bred, was a prompt 2-1 favorite in the Feb. 18, 1-mile Peppers Pride Handicap (R) for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares at Sunland Park.
Ridden by Roimes Chirinos for trainer Todd Fincher, Sippin made her 8-furlong trip in 1:40.99, and her margin of victory was three lengths from Sunday Rose. The filly banked the $51,000 winner’s share of the $85,000 purse to push her earnings to $408,597 from 14 outs.
Sippin is one of eight winners from 17 start- ers sired by Swissle Stick, a 16-year-old son of the Eastern Echo stallion Swiss Yodeler. Racing in 11 states from 2004-09, including Kentucky and California, Swissle Stick earned $129,964 from 71 outs.
Swissle Stick has sired the earners of more than $539,000 from five crops. A half brother to three stakes winners, including 2006 Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Brother Derek, the stallion is owned by Cuadra San Juditas LLC, and stands at Terry and Nan Lane’s TNL Farm at Bosque, New Mexico.
Sippin is also one of five winners from seven starters foaled by Samba Queen, a Kentucky-bred
daughter of the Storm Cat stallion Giant’s Causeway. The filly is a half sister to 2014 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby (R) winner Mancation.
Sippin’s second dam, the winning Baronius (BRZ) mare Misty Moon (BRZ), produced three stakes winners, all of whom are half sisters to Samba Queen, including Virginie (BRZ), the winner of the ‘99 Beverly Hills Handicap (G1) at Hollywood Park.
Sippin has won eight races, and her three wins in seven outs at Sunland include victories in the 2016 La Senora Stakes (R) and last year’s 1-mile, $85,000 Enchantress Stakes (R). The filly began her career with a 6-race win streak that included stakes scores at Ruidoso Downs, Zia Park, and Sunland.
Pink Cadillac finished third, 5 1/4 lengths from Sippin. Ivy Gimlet, Contradiction, My Bikini Fell Off, One Foxy Babe, Indian Tiva, and Ballinouttacontrol completed the order of finish.
Runner-up Sunday Rose was coming off of a neck victory in a 1-mile allowance-optional claiming ($50,000) route for state-bred distaff- ers at Sunland Park on January 28. A homebred 5-year-old daughter of Fusaichi Zenon (JPN)
owned by Michael G. Weatherly, Sunday Rose has won four of 21 starts, and the $17,000 runner- up share of the Peppers Pride purse bumped her earnings to $151,446.
Pink Cadillac pocketed $8,500 for her third-place finish for her owners, J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas, who also bred the 4-year-old Diabolical filly. Pink Cadillac has banked $166,197 from 17 races, and her three wins include a come-from-behind neck victory in last year’s 1 1/16-mile, $100,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks (R) at Sunland Park.
