Copper Spring’s stable of broodmares includes Lovethewayyoulie, who during her racing career won the Heritage Place Futurity and whose foals include Love The Way You Fly, a Champion colt in Louisiana as a 3 year old.
Another of their broodmares, Devil With A Blue Dress, is a full sister to World Champion Blues Girl Too, who won the Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos and the $2 million Los Alamitos Futurity and earned just over $2 million during her career.

Ms. Gilhousen’s purchase of Jet Black Patriot and her acquisition of the other studs and more than 40 broodmares underscores her commitment to horse racing in general and to New Mexico’s breeding program.
Jet Black Patriot, sire of over $14.8 million, headlines the ranch’s racehorse breeding program.
Other mares at the farm include Follies Corona Chick, a full sister to PYC Paint Your Wagon; and This Chick’s Famous, a half-sister to One Famous Eagle who is the sire of three All American Futurity winners in One Dashing Eagle (2012), Imperial Eagle (2016) and Fly Baby Fly (2017).
“We have some really nice mares,” said Brian.
With Copper Spring now established in New Mexico, the foals born this year will be New Mexico breds. “We’re residents. Our horses are residents. We’re New Mexicans,” says Brian.
Jet Black Patriot had previously stood in Louisiana. He became available at public auction after the federal government took possession of the horse as part of a drug trafficking investigation.

Racehorses and rural life were longshots
in Karen Gilhousen’s upbringing in suburban America. She was born in Lansing, Michigan, the oldest of four kids. Her dad Max worked in the automotive industry and her mom Francis (Karen says she preferred the name Sammie) worked in an office. Memories of her early childhood include the divorce of her parents when she was about five.
“I remember coming home from school and my mom telling me that my dad wasn’t going to be living there anymore,” says Karen. “I went into my bedroom, shut the
