MIGHT B MAGIC
by Danny Camp
Might B Magic soared to his first stakes victory in the $216,812 Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Mystery Futurity-RG3
at Will Rogers Downs on Nov. 10.
In the 350-yard stakes, Might B Magic didn’t
garner much respect. He finished fourth in his trial heat and made the finals with the ninth fastest qualifying time from his Oct. 28 trial.
In the finals, however, he stepped away from the 9-post in second and quickly grabbed the lead. Under Andrew
Samaniego, the gelding
stayed ahead of the pack
throughout, crossing the wire
1/2-length in front.
They completed the 350 yards in :17.449 to earn a career-best 99 speed index.
The gelding also earned the first place check worth $87,225, boosting his total earnings exponentially to $115,367 and he now has a race record of 7-3(1)-1-2.

BLACK FRYDAY
by John Moorehouse
Black Fryday produced a fine payday win- ning the $162,850 Southern California Derby-G2 at Los Alamitos on Dec. 14. Trained by John Cooper, Black Fryday
broke from the 8-gate under Eddie Garcia running fourth, then came flying midway through the race. Black Fryday & Garcia were a close second at the first call, moved into the lead by a head in the stretch, and crossed the wire first by a neck. The
400-yard trip took :19.772 for a 92 speed index.
The three-year-old black gelding secured a $68,397 payday that boosted his total earnings to $336,953 and he now has a race record of 6(2)- 6(1)-1 from 18 career starts.
Owner Ron Hartley purchased Black Fryday for $30,000 at the 2016 Heritage Place Sale. He also won the Governor’s Cup Derby-RG3
Connections include owner/breeder Arthur W. Devereaux and trainer Matthew Cody McCart. Devereaux bred Might B Magic out of six-time winner Shes Perfect Magic. The mare has produced 100% money earners from four starters, including additional winner Shes Perfect Okey and Fast Magic. Might B Magic is the first stakes winner and top earner of the brood.
“Magic is a high-strung kind of guy” said trainer Cody McCart. “After the race, he was
will rest for about 45 days then we will point him towards a derby at Remington Park.”

hard to handle. He’s tough to gallop in the morning, but I think he has a lot of talent. I was disappointed in the trials, he left flat footed and just barely qualified. In the finals, he broke good and ran a good race.
“This was the first stakes win for jockey Andrew Samaniego and he was tick- led.” Cody added. “The geld- ing pulled up perfect, we took him to the farm already. He
