McNair Joins Lazy E
Veteran horseman Monty McNair has joined the management team at Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma. McNair will join longtime Lazy E manager Matt Witman in running the ranch and in, “upholding the proven business model that has provided the success we have enjoyed in my 28 years here,” said AQHA past-president Butch Wise, who will continue to be involved in the ranch on a day-to-day basis.
Indiana Grand Meet Leaders
Indiana Grand ended their 2021 meet on Nov. 11. The husband-and-wife team of Gwen and Randy Williams were named the leading owners for the second straight year. Horses owned by Williams Racing won 11 races with $371,794 in earnings. Williams Racing now holds 44 wins at Indiana Grand are among the top 5 all-time winning Quarter Horse owners at the track. Two-year-old gelding Mr Michel (Kiss My Hocks-Lovemelikethat, Likenothinyoueversaw) was named the leading Quarter Horse at the track. Trained by Claudio Barraza for owner Alberto Valadez, Mr Michel won five of seven starts and earned over $200,000 to become
the leading money earning Quarter Horse in a single season at the track. Among his wins were the Miss Roxie Little Futurity and the Leader of the Class Futurity.
Canterbury Requests 2022 Dates
Canterbury Park has submitted a request to the Minnesota Racing Commission for 65 days of live horseracing in 2022, running from May
18 through Sept. 17. Purses are projected to be $225,000 per day. In 2021, Canterbury Park ex- ceeded expectation with an average of $894,736 in off-track handle. “In 2022, we plan to con- tinue to offer a strong wagering proposition at opportunistic times in the weekly calendar while making it easier for our passionate on-track fan base to return to the races by adding Saturday evening programs,” said company president Randy Sampson.
Jockey Jose Cedillo Wins First Race
Jockey Jose Cedillo, 22, won his first Quarter Horse race from 12 mounts on Oct. 24, pilot- ing Cartel Love to a 3/4-length win in a 350- yard allowance at Los Alamitos. Cartel Love (Favorite Cartel-All About Love, Feature Mr Jess) was winning for owners Jose R. Beltran and Francisco Diaz and trainer Jesus Nunez. It was the gelding’s third victory. Cedillo began working with Quarter Horses in Mexico,
spent some time in Texas, and then moved to California, where he has ridden in all of his starts. “It’s a big thrill and I’m extremely happy because this is my first win,” Cedillo said to Stallionesearch.com. “This is my first year at Los Alamitos and I’ve enjoyed it. I’m thankful to have had the support of a lot of great owners and trainers here.”
Indiana Horse Racing Association Hall
of Fame Induction
The Indiana Horse Racing Association on Oct. 24 held their annual banquet to induct two
new members into the Hall of Fame - Dr. James Carmichael and Ernie Gaskin. Carmichael, who was inducted posthumously, was an advocate for Quarter Horse racing, graduated from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine and owned a veterinary practice in the state. He
was one of the first members appointed to the Quarter Horse Breed Development Committee and was later appointed to the Thoroughbred Breed Development Committee, also serving
as chairman. Carmichael passed away in 2009. Gaskin was one of the first members of the Standardbred Breed Development Committee, lobbied for casino gaming at racetracks, and was a successful trainer in the state with two leading trainer titles at Hoosier Park. Portraits of the 18th and 19th Hall of Fame inductees will join the others on display in the Mezzanine at Indi- ana Grand Racing & Casino.
Montana 2022 Dates Set
The Montana Board of Horse Racing has issued 2022 race dates for Miles City and Great Falls. Miles City will run from May 7-22, and Great Falls is scheduled to run from July 16-31.
