SPEEDHORSE PHOTO ARCHIVE ANSWER
The photo on page 220 shows First Place Queen (First Place Dash-Illusive Princess, Illusivo) and G.R. Carter Jr. after winning the 2002 Los Alamitos Mil- lion Futurity-G1. This race became the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1 in 2006. Bred by Jerry Windham, First Place Queen started her career on the track at the age of two and raced until she was three. During that time, she earned $880,869, winning the 2002 Los Alamitos Million Futurity-G1 and Golden State Futurity-G1. She was also a finalist in the 2002 All American Futurity-G1 and 2003 Rainbow Derby- G1. She set a New Track Record for 250-yards in :13.056 for a 110 speed index in a claiming race at Ruidoso Downs.
After successful years on the track, First Place Queen went on to produce 13 winners from 27 starters and $1,207,012 in earnings. Her stakes win- ners include Mr Queens Mystery, winner of the 2008 Texas Classic Futurity-G1 and 2009 Manor Downs Derby-G3, and a finalist in the 2009 Texas Classic Derby-G1. Her other stakes winner is Queens Strawfly, who raced in Canada and the U.S., win- ning the 2007 Canada Juvenile Challenge. First Place Queen is also the dam of barrel horse sire Tres Kings, who is a futurity finalist sire from a limited number of foals to compete.
This year’s $2,009,825 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1 was won by Bomb Cyclone on Dec. 12. The gelding was ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for owner Rosenthal Ranch LLC and trainer Christopher O’Dell.
Chicks Tell Dies
1999 chestnut mare Chicks Tell (Chicks Beduino- Tell The Boys No, On A High) died in October at the age of 22 following health complications. Chicks Tell won four races and earned $41,115 on the track, winning the Huntington Beach Handi- cap, finishing second in the Prissy Fein Handicap, and third in the Coronado Handicap and Cypress Handicap. The 2-time PCQHRA Broodmare
of the Year is the dam of 37 foals, 34 starters, 27 winners, four stakes winners and the earners of over $2 million, including 2-time Champion Tell Cartel ($796,386) and 3-time stakes winner Forrest Fire ($335,306). Bred by Blane Schvaneveldt and owned by Martha F. Wells, Chicks Tell was laid to rest at Burns Ranch in California, her home for most of her life as a broodmare.
Moonin The Eagle Dies
2016 Champion Aged Stallion Moonin The Eagle (One Famous Eagle-Your First Moon, First Down Dash) has been laid to rest on Oct. 15. The 2012 gray stallion was taken to Louisiana State University after it was noticed that he was experiencing some difficulties. Moonin The Eagle won four stakes races, set three New Track Records, and earned $556,100 on the track. He is the sire of over $1.9 million from 2 crops to race, including his top earner in Flash Bak with $946,015 and two Grade 1 victories. Moonin The Eagle was purchased for a record $2.1 million by Bobby D. Cox at the 2018 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale.
