Fireball Flash, a 5-year-old daughter of champion First Moonflash racing for Dan Delaney and Ramon “Dosi” Alvarez, earned her first stakes victory in the November 1, 350- yard New Mexico Cup Distaff Stakes (R) for state-bred fillies and mares.
Ridden by Christian Ramos and sent to post as the 2-1 favorite, Fireball Flash defeated Mi Moonflash by a neck in :17.707. Alfredo Gomez prepped the gray mare, who banked the $18,000 winner’s share of the $30,000 purse.
Fireball Flash was bred by Dan Delaney, and she was making her first start since August 20, when she ran second, a half of a length behind winner A Flashin Blue, in a 400-yard, $46,900 open-condition allowance race at Albuquerque Downs. The mare’s sire, the First To Flash stallion First Moonflash, was the sport’s champion aged stallion in 2009.
From 2007-09, First Moonflash earned $969,828 and won 10 stakes from 25 races, includ- ing the 2008 and 2009 Championship at Sunland Park (G1), and he was a finalist in the 2008 All American Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs. The
stallion has sired the earners of more than $22.3 million from nine crops, including champions Handsome Jack Flash, Flash And Roll, and Foxy Moonflash, Grade 1 winner Too Flash For You, and graded stakes winner and 2014 All American Futurity (G1) runner-up Mad About The Moon.
First Moonflash died due to complications from laminitis in May 2019.
Fireball Flash’s dam, Runaway Dashing, is a homebred winning daughter of the Real Runaway stallion Runawaywiththegold. Campaigned exclusively in New Mexico, Fireball Flash has won four of 18 races and has earned $127,659. The mare’s resume includes a second-place finish in the 2019 Rita Danley Distaff Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares at Ruidoso Downs, and she was a finalist in the 2018 Zia Futurity (RG1) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds.
Jess To Reel ran third, a half of a length behind Fireball Flash, and was followed by Direct Deposit FS, Kellys First Moon, U Got The Look, Dolly Cartel, Famous Julia, and Surfz Up.
Runner-up Mi Moonflash banked $6,000 to bring her earnings to $119,211 for her owners,
Pierre Amestoy Jr., Leslie Amestoy, and Roger K. Beasley. The 4-year-old First Moonflash mare has won four races, and the record includes a third-place finish in the 2019 New Mexico State Fair Futurity (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs.
A 5-year-old daughter of the Mr Jess Perry stallion Jesse James Jr, Jess To Reel pocketed the $3,000 third-place share of the purse for her owner, Benjamin Calderon. The gray mare has won five of 17 starts and has earned $90,177.
