                 New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2)
Sent to post at odds of 9-1, Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC’s Woodys Gold scored his second stakes victory in the October 31, $205,940 New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2) for state-bred 3-year-old Quarter Horses at Zia Park.
Woodys Gold covered 400 yards in :19.327 and earned a 103 speed index while aided by a reported 15-mph tail wind. Jorge Torres rode the sorrel son of Woodbridge for trainer Clint Crawford.
Woodys Gold was bred by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico, and he was purchased by Don Cavenaugh as a yearling for $10,000 at the 2019 New Mexico- Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding’s stallion, Woodbridge, is an unraced 22-year- old son of the First Down Dash stallion Dash Ta Fame.
A full brother to Grade 1 winner Kendall Jackson and a half to 2009 AQHA champion sophomore filly Alice K White, Woodbridge has sired the earners of more than $4.4 million from 12 crops, including multiple graded stakes winner and 2019 All American Futurity (G1) runner-up Mister Riptide, multiple graded stakes winner Carson City Girl, and graded stakes winners Woodys Allstar and Woodys Copy Cat. The
stallion stands for a $4,500 fee at MJ Farms. Woodys Gold is out of All About Gold
(TB), a winning 12-year-old daughter of the Forty Niner stallion Gold Case. The gelding set the fourth-fastest qualifying time with
a second-place finish, a neck behind fastest qualifier Chicky Chicky Kai, in the first of two New Mexico Cup Derby trials on October 11.
Campaigned in two states, including Oklahoma, the gelding has won five of 14 starts, and the $100,911 winner’s share of the purse pushed his bankroll to $484,174, of which $418,190 has been earned from a dozen outs at the 400-yard distance. His resume includes a wire-to-wire, 1 1/4-length victory in last year’s 400-yard, $387,000 New Mexico State Fair Futurity (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs, and he ran second in last year’s Zia (RG1) and Mountain Top (RG2) futurities at Ruidoso Downs. He also was a finalist in the May 29, $361,000 Heritage Place Derby (G2) at Remington Park, and the July 31, $203,000 Zia Derby (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs.
Chicky Chicky Kai finished second, a neck behind Woodys Gold, and was followed by
3-2 favorite Bigg Dee, Leading Cartel, Hollyn Bootie, Nolans Dragon, Roll Big River, Dragon On Ice, Mallone, and Sheza Fast Jesse.
Chicky Chicky Kai is a chestnut daughter of the Chicks A Blazin stallion Jess A Chicks campaigned by Mike G. Parker. The runner-up in the September 19, 400-yard New Mexico State Fair Derby (R) at Albuquerque Downs, the filly has won four of 11 starts and has pocketed $135,150, of which $127,164 has been earned from eight races this season.
Bigg Dee races for Rex Wells, who pur- chased the Big Daddy Cartel gelding as a yearling for $30,000 at the 2019 New Mexico- Bred Sale. Bigg Dee has won eight of 15 starts and has banked $347,154, and his three stakes victories include the July 31, 400-yard Zia Derby (RG2).
