“We have about 70 horses right now in training and the key to having success is having great help. My two assistant trainers [are] Ramiro Suarez and Jama Cano. We have a great crew, which allows me to be able to manage everything.”
having great help. My two assistant trainers [are] Ramiro Suarez and Jama Cano. We have a great crew, which allows me to be able to man- age everything and split time between work and my family. My family is a big part of my success. My wife, Courtney, is my backbone
as she keeps me organized on a daily basis and keeps up with the bills and books to take a lot of stress off of me.”
WHAT’S YOUR PHILOSOPHY WHEN IT COMES TO TRAINING RACE HORSES? “My philosophy to training is just being a
teacher. Every horse is different. Every horse has to be trained different on a daily basis. I love the challenge of fixing a horse. You have to have daily routines with these horses. I make a monthly schedule for every horse in my barn pointing to a race. Of course, there’s a lot of changes day to day because with these horses they find ways to hurt themselves overnight.”
WHAT GOALS DO YOU HAVE FOR 2021?
“My goal for 2021 is simple: beat 2020’s year. I’m very competitive and hate to lose any
race. My goal since I’ve started was to always beat last year’s records.”
AS SOMEONE IN YOUR EARLY THIR- TIES, WHAT DO YOU THINK NEEDS
TO HAPPEN TO GET MORE YOUNGER PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE HORSE RACING BUSINESS?
“As someone who is only 31 years old,
I see that I’m one of the very few young people in this business who is trying to
have a future in race horses. This year I’ve decided to start running as a board mem- ber for every association I possibly can.
I think our industry needs more insight from younger people. Our industry leaders have done great, but times have changed and I myself don’t see a long future for our industry. We have to start getting We have to start getting the 4-H kids involved, that’s where we need to begin. Our associations are too worried about being the police of our industry and spending the majority of our money on that, and not on our younger generation of kids.”
