New Mexico State Fair Derby
RIVER FLASH
by Michael Compton
Multiple stakes winner River Flash has a nose for the finish line. The three-year- old gray gelding registered his ninth career win
and seventh straight with a determined victory in the $287,844 New Mexico State Fair Derby at Albuquerque Downs.
Ridden by Adrian Ramos, River Flash broke alertly in the 400-yard test and dueled throughout with JC New Dawn.
The pair of competitors raced as a team from start to finish, with River Flash prevailing by a neck as the odds-on favorite in the hard- fought contest.
River Flash stopped the timer in :19.432, earning a speed index of 96.
Owned by Robert Driggers and Ben Lee Ivey and trained by Wesley Giles, who also sent out third-place finisher BF Shes Outrageous, River Flash improved his impressive record to 13-9-1-0.
The $143,922 winner’s share of the purse increased his lifetime bankroll to $407,827.
