Labor Day Weekend #1 Stakes
APOLLITICAL PENCE

Making his first start in more than six months, Dunn Ranch’s Apollitical Pence was a prompt even-money favorite in the $75,000 Labor Day
Weekend #1 Stakes at Ruidoso Downs on Sept. 3. Apollitical Pence went 250 yards in :12.732,
breaking the previous track record for the distance
of :12.903 set by Revvy on June 2, 2014. Francisco Calderon rode the 6-year-old sorrel gelding for trainer Monty Arrossa. Apollitical Pence’s margin of victory was 1- length over San Lorenzo Tay.
Apollitical Pence was coming off of a 1/2-length victory in the 400-yard Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship-G1 on Feb. 20. All told, he has won 15 of 32 outs -- including the last two runnings
of the Grade 1 Champion of Champions -- and the $45,000 winner’s share of the purse from his eighth career stakes victory boosted his bankroll to $1,561,985.
The gelding was bred in Oklahoma by Dunn Ranch and Womack Cavender Farms, and he is out of Send City, an unraced homebred daughter of Champion Tres Seis. The gelding’s second dam Send Me The Candy, won the 1996 Remington Park Futurity-G1.
San Lorenzo Tay (Ivory James-Shes Dashin First) earned the $15,000 runner-up share of the purse to bring his bankroll to $688,207 from 10 starts for his owner, Rogelio Marquez Jr. Juan Pulido rode the sophomore gelding for trainer Santos Carrizales Jr.
Revenant Moon (A Revenant-Sochi Moon) ran third. Oscar Andrade Jr. rode the 3-year-old filly for owners Trey Odom, Scott Bryant and Norman W. Allen, and trainer Trey Wood.

VALIANT STARS

Sent to post as the even-money favorite in a full field of 10 fillies and mares, Valiant Stars led at every call en route to a 1 1/4-length victory in the
$35,624 Q-Racing Ruidoso Distaff Challenge at Ruidoso Downs on Aug. 27.
Valiant Stars covered 400 yards in :19.666 under jockey Noe Garcia Jr. Trainer Fred Danley prepped the 4-year-old Valiant Hero filly for owners J & SM Inc. and Stone Chase Stables LLC.
In addition to earning the $21,375 winner’s share of the purse, Valiant Stars landed a berth in the Q-Racing Video Challenge Championship-G1 at Horseshoe Indianapolis on Oct. 22. Raced in two states, including Oklahoma, the filly has won eight of 18 starts -- including seven of 14 at Ruidoso Downs -- and she has earned $318,838. Her record includes a second-place run, 1-length behind winner Empressum, in last year’s $672,732 Ruidoso Derby-G1.
The filly was bred in Utah by McColee Land and Livestock LLC, and she was purchased by John and Sue May of J & SM Inc. for $21,000 at the 2019 Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale. Valiant Stars is out of Cluster Of Stars TB, winner of the 2013 Gallant Bloom Handicap-G2 at Belmont Park and Distaff Handicap-G2 at Aqueduct.
Jose Aguilar Mendoza’s Dedikated (Duponte-Kpax) ran second. Luis Martinez rode the filly for trainer Eloy Navarro. One Perfect Lady earned an autumn trip to Indiana with her victory in the 350-yard $86,862 John Deere Ruidoso Juvenile Challenge-G3
at Ruidoso Downs on Aug. 27.
Trained by Xavier Rodriguez for owner La Feliz
Montana Ranch LLC, One Perfect Lady reached the wire in :17.449, and her winning margin was a neck over R Ladys Dynasty, who was disqualified from second and placed ninth following a stewards’ inquiry.
Felipe Garcia-Luna rode One Perfect Lady, who banked the $52,117 winner’s share of the purse, boosting her total bankroll to $70,067. The sorrel filly has won 4 of 7 races and has earned $70,067, of which $69,117 has been pocketed from 6 starts at Ruidoso Downs.
One Perfect Lady was the 3rd-fastest qualifier with a 1/2-length win in the last of 4 trials on Aug. 13. The filly was bred in New Mexico by La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC and MRB Racing, and she is out of The Perfect Eagle, an unplaced 7-year-old daughter of Champion One Famous Eagle. She traces back to her 3rd dam Dinastia Toll BRZ, a multiple graded stakes winning mare and the dam of Champion FDD Dynasty.
Return My Corona (A Revenant-Sippn Secret Coronas) was placed second. James Flores rode the gelding for owner Joshua Owens and trainer Mike Joiner. Bold N Brave (Corona Cartel-Big Biz Perry) was third for owner HV Ranch LLC. Sergio Dominguez rode the gelding for trainer John Stinebaugh.
