Cash Caravan Stakes
JESS ROCKET MAN
by Michael Compton
When it comes to the Cash Caravan Stakes for Minnesota-breds at Canterbury Park, bet on horses by Apollitical Jess and out of Paint Or More. That breeding has produced three horses that have won the Cash Caravan for the past five years: Dickey Bob in 2018, 2020, and 2021; PYC Jess Bite Mydust in 2019; and—on Aug. 25—Jess Rocket Man.
With Edwin Escobedo in the irons, Jess Rocket Man broke in third place from the rail and quickly went to the front in this year’s Cash Caravan.
The brown gelding dominated throughout the 440-yards, gaining 1/2-lenght at the first call and 1 1/2-lengths at the top of the stretch, pulling away to score by 1 1/4-lengths in :21.678 for a 105 speed index.
Bruce and Judy Lunderborg bred and race Jess Rocket Man in the name of Lunderborg LLC. Jason Olmstead trains the gelding, who has won five stakes, including the 2022 Keokuk Stakes-G3, and placed in three others for total earnings of $174,742. Jess Rocket Man broke Canterbury’s 350-yard track mark in this year’s Bob Morehouse Stakes.
The Lunderborgs bred Jess Rocket Man out of their stakes winner Paint Or More. The mare has produced five starters, all winners, including PYC Jess Bite Mydust and Dickey Bob, who are both multiple stakes winners.
Jockey Doug Frink rode Trippin Guns to second for owner Murray Asher and trainer Briannah McDaniel. Trippin Guns was coming off back-to-back wins at Canterbury Park.
Myownersbroke (BP Phoenix Reign-Hit The Throtle), bred, owned, and trained by Mark Wilson, ran third under jockey Nik Goodwin. The 5-year-old gelding finished second in the 2021 Cash Caravan and third in the 2020 Minnesota Derby.
Holy Storm (Red Storm Cat-Holy White Socks-TB) completed the field after the scratches of Averys Rocket and Dickey Bob.
The 1889 Futurity
BHRTHEBOMBDOTCOM
by John Moorehouse
BHR The Bomb Dot Com picked an ideal moment to make her trip to the winner’s circle. A 1/2-length victory in the $22,000 1889 Futurity on
Aug. 31 at Canterbury Park broke the filly’s maiden and simultaneously put her in black type.
Broken Heart Ranch home-bred the two-year-old filly, who made her competitive debut in May and attempted to qualify previously for the BHS Open Futurity at Miles City and the Energy Downs 307 Futurity. She had finished no better than third coming into this race, making her a 15-1 underdog and a pleasant surprise for those who backed her in this one.
Breaking from the 5-post under Randy Vega, BHR The Bomb Dot Com was running 3rd at the 1st call, then made her move to seize the lead. She had a 1/2-length separation entering the stretch and held on to win by that same margin. Robert Johnson trains BHR The Bomb Dot Com, who finished her 350-yard trip in :18.280. Johnson has prepped the winner in the 1889 Futurity in 3 of its 4 runnings.
BHR Eau So Flashy is the dam of BHR The Bomb Dot Com. The 2015 mare was also home-bred by Broken Heart Ranch.
Redoinit (Ima Ramblin On-Bigtime Folly), the heavy post-time favorite at less than even-money
odds, got pinched at the start under Stormy Smith but recovered and finished second for owner Steve Leonard and trainer Mallory Norton. Norton also trains Hidden Charms (Ima Ramblin On-Cartel Dakota), who led early before finishing third for owner Randal Schwartz and jockey Ron Beverly Jr. Followed by WB Dashing Brat (Mr Apollitical Dash-Bratina), Special Dipper (Six Figure Sixes-Denises Doll), Mountains Are Blue (Gone To The Mountain-Easily A Gol), Trickn Wagon (Fire Breathing Wagon-Trickarita), First Prize Ardis (First Prize Doc-Bloomerang), and DCR All Fired Up (Fire Breathing Wagon-Madam Doubtfire). Makin It Rayne scratched.
Picov Derby
EYE LIVE FOR CANDY
Eby Danny Camp
ye Live For Candy took home the biggest sack of
sweets in the Picov Derby, a 400-yard event held at Ajax Downs with a purse valued at $43,788..
The brown filly stepped away from the 2-post in second place with Ismael Mosqueira in the irons. Eye Live For Candy had won her last three in a row with Ismael aboard, so why should this be any different, and it wasn’t. After the break the fastest qualifier from the Aug. 17 trials quickly took command and the farther they went the bigger her lead was. They crossed the line with a 1 3/4-lengths lead, stopping the timer in :20.023 to earn a 95 speed index.
The daughter of A Revenant now has a lifetime bankroll worth $75,383, and her race record stands at five wins out of 15 career starts. All five wins came with Ismael Mosqueira aboard.
Her connections include owner Milena Kwiecien and trainer Jason Pascoe.
She was bred in Wyoming by Klay Hinck out of the mare Eyesa Candy Maker, an ROM earner with over $106,000 in earnings. The mare has produced nine foals with Eyesa Wagon Maker as her top earner.
Third fastest qualifier First Cold Wave (Cold Hard Dash-Cassies Carver) fought the good fight to bank second place money. His team includes owner Robert Bailey and trainer Jason Pascoe. Brian Bell was handling the reins.
SW The Redeemer (Hes Relentless-Rockin Miss Kitty) had the second fastest time from the trials. In the finals he made a late rush to pocket third place money. He is owned by Milena Kwiecien and trained by Jason Pascoe. J Botello had the riding assignment.
The remaining order of finish was Lethal Tres Seis (Tres Seis-Lethal Cartel), Scarletts Cartel (Carters Cartel-Scarlett Jewel), JTC Lil Moonbar (Jess Twice Cash-Shinin Moonbar) & Kold Kinda Star (Cold Hard Dash-Kool Kinda Star). Sacred Heart and SW Snowmagicallykool were scratched.
