Jockey Dominguez Rides Six Winners
Jockey Uriel Dominguez rode the winners of six races at Sweetwater Downs on Sept. 4. In race #1, Dominguez scored a 1/2-length victory with Kellys First in a maiden event; in race #2, another maiden, he went wire-to-wire aboard Fannin The Sparks to win by 1-length; he did not have a horse in race #3, but he won an allowance wire-to-wire in race #4 with Dynasty Switch; in race #5, he scored in another allowance with The Iron Chef by 1 1/2-lengths; in race #6 he won an allowance aboard UD Goldenboy; he didn’t have horses
in races #7, #8 or #9, but in race #10 he scored his sixth win of the day aboard ER Switching Mtns wire-to-wire in another allowance. Overall, Dominguez has ridden the winners of 378 races and his mounts have earned over $2 million.
ClaimersCup.com Launched For 2022 Race Series
The upcoming StallioneSearch.com Claimers Cup Race Series will debut during the 2022 Lone Star Park Fall Meeting of Champions,
and StallioneSearch.com has launched the ClaimersCup.com website. The Claimers Cup Race Series included three races at Lone Star Park in the Claimers Cup Dash (110 yards), Claimers Cup Middle Ground (300 yards), and Claimers Cup Classic (400 yards). Horsemen can view the race conditions and use an electronic nomination process to enter horses at claimerscup.com.
Arapahoe Park Purse Increase
Bally’s Arapahoe Park has announced a
purse increase for the final weeks of the meet, including a $2,000 increase per race for all overnights with a total of nine race per day and one additional race day on Oct. 1. Also, all major upcoming Quarter Horse stakes events will see purse increases, including the Mile High Futurity and Derby with trials on Sept. 18 and finals on closing day Oct. 4. Docuseries Filmed At Sweetwater Downs
A docuseries about horseracing is being filmed at Sweetwater Downs in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Track announcer A.P. Harreld is
an executive producer of the series, and film makers Michael and David Hansen intend to make “Racing at the Rock” a thoughtful and respectful documentary about the horsemen and horses who make their living around racing. “I am looking forward to horse racing season at Sweetwater Downs come alive on screen – and reveal all that personality, grit, hope and pride in an honest, unvarnished and competitive capsule,” said Sweetwater Downs general manager Eugene Joyce. The 12th season of
live racing at Sweetwater Downs runs through Oct. 2, and the release date of the film will be announced at a later date.
Canada Cup Sale Shows Across-The-Board Increases
The Alberta Quarter Horse Racing Association held their 27th annual Canada
QH Cup Mixed Sale on Sept. 16 in Red Deer, Alberta. Reports show 13 of 23 head offered were sold for $92,900, a 10% increase over last year. The sale average reached $7,146, a 2% increase, and the median price of $7,500 was a 43% increase compared to 2021. The top seller at $13,000 was Hip #4, O Lets Be First (First Timber-Lets Get Going, Separatist), a gelding who is a sibling to three blacktype runners, consigned by Wesley Oulton and purchased by Jeffrey Rath. Jim Cusitar was the leading buyer with two purchases totaling $15,000, Wesley Oulton was the leading consignor/agent with two consignments selling for $20,500, and First Timber was the leading sire of sale yearlings by average with two selling for a $7,750 average.
Paul Albert Treasure Passes Away
Horseman Paul Albert Treasure, 66, passed away Aug. 20 at his home in Middleton, Idaho. Paul was born in 1956 and graduated from Ririe High School in 1974. He had son Justin Treasure with his first wife and then married LeiLani Elison and had three more children in Megan, Melia and Lex. Paul was a well-known horse trainer and trained Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse earners of more than $2.8 million. He is survived by his wife LeiLani, his four children, two grandchildren and six grandchildren, as well as many other family members and friends.
Martha ‘Mimi’ Wells Passes Away
Longtime Quarter Horse breeder/owner Martha ‘Mimi’
Wells passed away
unexpectedly in
her sleep on Sept. 11 at the age of 75. Wells grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
and competed in
horse shows from
the age of seven. She attended the University of Arizona, where she met her future husband, the late Dwayne Wells – an accomplished jockey and stakes-winning trainer. Martha was the breeder/ owner of 2020 Champion 3 Year Old, Champion 3-Year-Old Colt and 2020 PCQHRA Horse of the Year Tell Cartel; the breeder with her husband Dwayne and the owner of 2000 Champion 3-Year-Old Gelding Chicks First Policy; and
the owner of 2-time James V.A. Carter Award Outstanding Broodmare of the Year Chicks
Tell. Mimi was recognized for her outstanding contribution to racing with the 2000 Frank Vessels Sr. Memorial Award and in 2012 and 2019 with the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association Breeder Special Achievement Award.
Delta Downs conducted a meet with races from Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, which transferred their dates to the track in Vinton, Louisiana. The meet ran from July 28 through Sept. 3, and the leaders were declared on closing night. The leading owner was Rogelio Marquez Jr with three wins and $271,649 in earnings, marking the third time he was named top owner at Delta Downs. The leading trainer was Kenneth Roberts Sr. with seven victories and $281,864 in purse money. Roberts was winning his 11th leading trainer title at the track. There was a tie for the leading jockey title between David Alvarez and Juan Garcia Jr. Each rider
won 12 races and each jockey has now won three leading jockey titles at the track.
