He added this, “I believed in that pedigree. The reason I picked that mare is that people had a bad taste in their mouth about Moon Lark. But I knew people back
in the 80’s when I was first interested, I knew those guys that had Moon Lark and it piqued my interest. I knew many of those Moon Larks were about half mean and this mare was not any different, but the thing you get out of that family is a lot of try.”
He concluded about the role of this family on his breeding program. “We have been blessed and I’ve learned over the years and have been real fortunate and had some good athletes, and the last couple of years it has just kicked off.”
Moon Lark is an interesting individual as he was the 1978 All American Futurity
winner that was the Champion Two Year Old and Champion Two-Year-Old Colt that year. He came back at three to become the 1979 World Champion, Champion Three Year Old and Champion Three-Year-Old Colt. He made 19 starts with 13 wins, four seconds and earnings of $859,356. He became the sire of horses that earned 668 racing ROM with 52 stakes winners. His leading money earner was Spring Lark, the 1985 Champion Three-Year-Old Colt. Moon Lark, the broodmare sire, was the maternal grandsire of 630 ROM and 39 stakes winners. His leading money earner as a broodmare sire was Quick Moon Sign, winner of the Remington Park Futurity-G1. It must be noted that Quick Moon Sign was sired by Royal Quick Dash, the sire of Royal Medallion. Moon Lark was sired by Top Moon, the sire of Bugs Alive In 75 and the winner of the 1975 All American Futurity-G1. Top Moon was sired by Moon Deck and out of Rica Bar by Barred.
1978 All American Futurity winner and World Champion Moon Lark, the sire of Fontana Beaujolais.
Debonairess was a race mare with 15 starts, two wins, three seconds and six thirds earning $43,690. She was stakes placed with thirds in the 1985 Busch Graham Farms Futurity and 1987 Graham Farms Maturity. Her sire Mr Dark Jet was the winner of the 1979 South Texas Derby. He was sired by Three Oh’s, the 1968 All American Futurity winner. The dam of Debonairess was Cause Im Easy by Easy Six by Easy Jet.
The produce record for Debonairess will verify why Holt liked this mare. She
