of The Paint Horse Journal, a staff writer for Western Horseman, and he was published in the Appaloosa Journal. He co-authored volumes 2-6 in the Quarter Horse Legends book series and he was the sole author of volume 8 on The Hank Wiescamp Story. Holmes began his own pub- lishing company in 2001, LOFT Enterprises, LLC, authoring several books including Wire to Wire - the Walter Merrick Story.
Lone Star Park Announces Renovations
Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie, Texas, announced scheduled renovations, which should be finished in time for the upcom-
ing Thoroughbred meet set for April 11. Renovations include a complete track recon- ditioning and changes to the clubhouse. Lone Star Park also announced a new exclusion policy, reserving the right to withhold stalls
or accept entries from any horseman on the suspended lists of the American Quarter Horse Association or The Jockey Club.
Penn National Ready To Begin Work On New Ohio Tracks
According to The Associated Press, Penn National Gaming, Inc. has begun demoli- tion of a closed auto plant in southwest Ohio and is nearly ready to begin construction on a horseracing track to be called Hollywood Slots at Dayton Raceway. The company still needs state approval, however, to move Raceway Park from Toledo to Dayton and to become
a video lottery sales agent, as well as approval to relocate Beulah Park from Columbus to Youngstown. Penn’s application to move both tracks could be voted on in March, with a relocation fee of $75 million paid per track. Penn National owns casinos in Columbus and Toledo and plans to open Hollywood Slots at Dayton Raceway in 2014.
Duncan Patterson Named RCI Chairman
W. Duncan Patterson on Jan. 15 was named the new Chairman of the Association of Racing Commissioners International (RCI). Patterson is President of real estate agency Patterson-Price Associations, LLC. He is the former Chairman of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission, a former trainer and amateur Steeplechase rider, and a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Steeplechase Association. Patterson also served as Chairman of the Drug Testing Standards and Practices Committee and was a member of the Model Rules Committee at the RCI.
Humane Society Forms Responsible Horse Breeders Council
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is forming a Responsible Horse Breeders Council to improve horse welfare by decreasing the number of horses at risk of being neglected, abused or slaughtered for human consumption. The Council discour- ages overbreeding and promotes responsible horse ownership, horse rescue and re-homing efforts. The Council encourages horse breed- ers to sign a pledge agreeing to take back
any horse they have bred should that horse become homeless or at risk of being abused or sent to slaughter. Over 800 breeders have already signed the pledge by visiting www. humanesociety.org or by emailing vpringle@ humanesociety.org. Horse owners can also
use the list to search for their horse’s breeder in the event they need assistance in caring for their horse.
Equine Guelph Colic Prevention eWorkshop
Equine Guelph has declared 2013 the Year of Colic Prevention and is offering an eWork- shop on colic prevention from March 11-24. The online course is designed to help horse owners understand colic and take preventa- tive measures by following good management practices. Topics to be covered include identify- ing risk factors, understanding types of colic, detecting early symptoms, and developing preventative strategies. Equine Guelph has also launched a free online “Colic Risk Rater” to assess and calculate colic risk. Visit wwwe- quineguelph.ca for more information.
