25 miles outside Billings in Park City, Montana. “It was sandwiched between two big Quarter Horse ranches: one a working Quarter Horse ranch with about 5,000 acres and the other a racing Quarter Horse ranch on about 3,000 acres,” Rod says. “I got to know both those ranchers and helped out on both ranches at times, and that’s when I really started falling in love with horses.”
He ended up buying a broodmare in foal from the working ranch and that mare was by a Swaps-bred stallion that stood at the racing ranch. “So, both ranchers were involved in it,” he says.
“I ended up having that baby there at my ranch in Montana,” he continues. “He was probably the most perfect little Quarter Horse you could imagine; he was just gorgeous. Both those ranchers encouraged me to race that baby, but I had no idea what racing was even about.
“When he was about 6 months old, we decided to move from Montana to Rogue River just east of Grants Pass in southwest Oregon,” Rod adds. “As that baby got older, it was always in the back
