 Speedhorse Derby-G3
HAULIN CANDY SALT
by Stacy Pigott
Longtime breeder and owner Carl Pevehouse had never experienced a night like he did on Aug. 4 at Fair Meadows at
Tulsa. Pevehouse qualified seven horses to the Speedhorse Futurity-G2 and Speedhorse Derby-G3, winning the derby with his homebred filly Haulin Candy Salt.
“Haulin Candy Salt is a really nice filly,” said trainer Clinton Crawford. “She run second here last year in the
futurity. She’s been a great
filly to have. She’s been really sound. She come out of the trials perfect. I looked for a big comeback from her in the finals and she did.”
In the trials, Haulin
Candy Salt was making her
first start since the end of
the Remington Park meet
in late May. The two-
month layoff freshened her
up nicely, as she raced to
a 1 1/2 length win in her trial, setting the third-fastest qualifying time of :17.190 for the finals. Fastest qualifier Chicks Smart Money set a track record of :17.066 in win- ning his trial, resulting in favored status in the finals.
Ridden by Alex Baldillez Jr. in the finals, Haulin Candy Salt came back even stronger. Breaking smartly from post position six, Haulin Candy Salt took the lead by the
first call and kept to business, holding off a strong challenge from Chicks Smart Money throughout the 350 yards. At the wire, Haulin Candy Salt was a neck in front of Chicks Smart Money, with PYC Cash one length back in third.
It was the first career stakes win for Haulin Candy Salt, who had come close
at Remington Park earlier this year. On March 10, she was second in the Prissy Gold Digger Stakes before qualifying to the $246,000 Remington Park Oklahoma- Bred Derby. In a rare off-the-board finish, Haulin Candy Salt ran 10th in the finals.
“She flipped in the gate,” Crawford said of the filly’s poor showing in the Remington Park Derby. “We had a rig on her. We really didn’t need a rig on her, but we put one
on her as a 2-year-old because she was a little fractious, so we kept running her as
a 3-year-old in it. And sure enough, they rattled the gates a little bit and she hit the
rig and it made her throw her head. I prob- ably should have scratched her that night but I didn’t and that’s why she ran the way she did.”
She redeemed herself by qualifying to the Grade 1 Heritage Place Derby, where she finished fourth.
“The Heritage Place was a very tough derby. She left there that night in front
trying to win it, and those horses just run her down,” Crawford said of the 400- yard Heritage Place Derby. “She really likes 350. That’s a better spot for her.”
As to future spots for the filly, Crawford indicated
she could travel to Lone
Star Park for the fall meet- ing there. When she starts again, her past performances will show a new record of four wins from 11 start and $153,270 in earnings. Haulin
Candy Salt is the second of three foals for Salt Lake Spitty, and her only stakes winner. Her
second dam is Lil Spit Curl, the dam of Grade 1 winner and sire Spit Curl Jess.
Even-money favorite Chicks Smart Money settled for second under jockey G.R. Carter Jr., who rode the second-place finishers in all four of the Speedhorse races held that evening. Robert Dimmitt saddled Chicks Smart Money (First Smart Money- Beduinos Chick Jet), who is owned by the Joe and Judith Chappell Trust. Chicks Smart Money has started only three times in 2012, winning an allowance and his trial prior to this stakes-placed effort.
PYC Cash (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Wallstreet Darlin) was third for owners James Sills and Gerald Swindell. Eddie D. Willis trains the gelding and gave the leg up to jockey Jimmy Brooks.
The remaining order of finish was Dark Ivory Storm (Ivory James-A Little Storm), Eyema Candy Tree (Oak Tree Special-Eyema Royal Candy), Valjean (Valient Hero- Thanks Jens), Smokin Bye You (Sweet First Dash-Eye My Alexis), and Black Rosalita (Sweet First Down-Poneta). Send Me A Candy Tree and Sumokin were scratched.
