We are all born with a potential for greatness. No exception. Although most do not realize their full potential, a handful rise to extraordinary heights and some even become legends. To rank amongst this elite group, one must be able to adapt to change. To achieve greatness, an individual must be well-rounded.
FDD Dynasty has certainly reached the epitome of greatness. He has been shaped by the many changes throughout his career, and it shows in his achievements on the track and as a sire.
FDD Dynasty was bred by the partnership of the Vessels Stallion Farm of Bonsall California, and the Fakri Farm, founded by the late Jose Nelson Fakri of Brazil.
Pat Guthrie of Rancho Mirage in California, and Billy Smith, went in together to purchase the horse at the Los Alamitos Sale. “I knew Mike (Joiner) was going with him (Smith)
and both of them have a tremendous eye for horses and I trusted any decisions they made,” Guthrie explained about trainer Joiner and Smith, whom he had partnered with on other horses. The duo purchased FDD Dynasty, a 2004 bay colt, for $70,000. Co-breeder Scoop Vessels approached them about retaining a third interest, and the three owners turned the colt over to Joiner for training. Currently, FDD Dynasty is owned by THE FDD Dynasty Syndicate of Norman, Oklahoma.
“Most of us fish around and fish around and, if we are lucky, we get one like FDD
Dynasty,” Guthrie said. They surely ‘got one’ in FDD Dynasty. “We certainly couldn’t disagree with his pedigree and he looked smooth and well-balanced,” said Joiner about the purchase.
By First Down Dash, the all-time leading money earning sire of over $88.7 million, and out of the Tolltac mare Dinastia Toll BRZ, dam of over $2.1 million, FDD Dynasty made a big impression in the early stages of his career by winning his first four outs.
The colt was already learning how to change his habits to better himself, to become greater. “He worked good, but he didn’t show me anything exceptional,” trainer Mike Joiner said early on about his trainee. “It wasn’t until his first official race, a 300-yard maiden on May 3, 2006, that he got out there and said, ‘Here I am.’ He won by a length and looked super good doing it.”
FDD Dynasty made his second start
in the trials to the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 where he scored a 1/2-length victory for the second fastest qualifying time. In the $1,142,000 finals, no one really knew what to expect of the colt. He was 2-for-2. Could he keep his winning streak alive? The day arrived and he did not disappoint. FDD Dynasty ran the race on his own and needed little guidance from Champion Jockey G.R. Carter Jr., finishing 3/4-lengths in front. He was now 3-for-3 and showed no signs of slowing.
