William O. Dale has been breeding horses for 52 years and likes to race homebreds. But he relaxed that rule on the advice of Butch Wise, resulting in Jess Savin Candy, who raced for Dale and Dr. James Streelman in the name of their Dutch Masters III.
At the 2020 Heritage Place Yearling Sale, Wise told Dale that he had “a horse you’ve got to look at.”
As Dale later recalled, “He reminded me a lot of a Champion we had a few years back named The Casanova.”
Dale bred The Casanova, trained by John Stinebaugh for owners James and Marilyn Helzer. Stinebaugh liked Jess Savin Candy as well, and so they bought him for $30,000.
Dale phoned Streelman with the news. At the awards ceremony, Dale recalled that Streelman told him, “Now remember, anything you buy is half mine.” That was an easy decision to make because, as Dale said about Streelman, “He’s a wonderful partner and a wonderful guy.”
Dale lives in Missouri and Streelman in California, but Jess Savin Candy made all of his starts in New Mexico at Ruidoso Downs. Jess Savin Candy’s record there helped Dutch Masters III win the Champion Owner title and Francisco Calderon win Champion Jockey title.
Jess Savin Candy debuted in his trial for the Ruidoso Futurity-G1, finishing with the second- fastest qualifying time. In the final, Jess Savin Candy hopped a little when the gate opened, but still won by a neck.
Returning for the Rainbow Futurity-G1, Jess Savin Candy won his trial. Despite the sloppy/ sealed track, Jess Savin Candy scored by a nose for his connections.
After winning his trial, a rough trip in the All American Futurity-G1 thwarted Jess Savin Candy’s chances of an All American Triple Crown. He finished fourth and came out of the race with a leg injury.
Nevertheless, it was a splendid season.
“The thing about a horse like that is he does so many wonderful things for all of his connections,” said Dale. “You get a horse like this, it brings happiness to everybody.”
