Quarter Horse racing often means family, and that is certainly the case with Canadian Champion Destello De Luna.
William Leech trains the gelding for his wife and daughter, Jane Leech and Haley Moreno. And to top it off, Haley’s husband, Ricardo Moreno, rode Destello De Luna throughout the year.
Bred in Alberta, Canada, by Ken McFarlane, Destello De Luna is by Lethal N First and out of winner A Mere Toast. The second dam, A Mere Fame, was stakes-placed at Los Alamitos.
Destello De Luna made all of his starts in his native country. He began at Century Mile, started twice at Grande Prairie, and finished the year back at Century Mile.
Destello De Luna improved throughout the year. He began with a second in his trial for the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity. In the 300-yard final, he was coming on late and nabbed third.
McFarlane had sold Destello De Luna to Jane and Haley for $4,400 at the 2020 Alberta Quarter Horse Racing Association Yearling Sale.
Destello De Luna acquitted himself well in the 300-yard Sales Stakes Futurity at Grande Prairie, running second in both his trial and the final. William Leech also trained Obsessed Bug, the winner of the final.
Back at Century Mile, Destello De Luna got his first victory in his trial for the Alberta Bred Futurity-G3, qualifying the second fastest. The 350-yard distance suited him better because he closed tremendously in the final after breaking fifth. Destello De Luna got up right at the wire to defeat odds-on favorite O First Sweet Heart by a nose.
William Leech excels at winning the Alberta Bred Futurity.
Destello De Luna’s victory gave Leech a stakes-record 14th win in the race. It is also an event that often crowns the Canadian Champion.
Past winners have included Royal Quick Wind in 2001, Poutn On The Wagon (trained by William Leech) in 2016, and Eyesa Timber in 2020, all Champions.
