Fantastic Fly Apollo, the 2020 South American Champion, continued to impress in 2021 to such an extent that he was voted his second consecutive South American Championship title.
He only started twice, but both were big victories. Rivail Rosa, who trains Fantastic Fly Apollo for owners Haras Tres Climas and Fabio Mattos, explained that Fantastic Fly Apollo had some issues early in the year. After both victories, Mattos complimented Rosa on his patience with Fantastic Fly Apollo and for bringing him back for another season.
Fantastic Fly Apollo first met the starter in 2021 in the July 17 GP Presidente da ABQM-II Derby. Breaking from the outside post, he dominated by going right to the front. He vanquished his five opponents
by 2 1/2-lengths, completing 365 meters
in :19.446.
In his next race, the Aug. 14 GP Presidente do Jockey Club de Sorocaba-III Derby, Fantastic Fly Apollo proved almost as impressive. This time he drew post 2 and met four rivals. North American on the rail stayed with Fantastic Fly Apollo through the early part of the 402 meters, but ultimately Fantastic Fly Apollo scored by 1 1/2 lengths in a time of :21.719.
Ademir Jose Rorato bred Fantastic Fly Apollo, a son of Fantastic Corona Jr out of the Eyesa Special mare Flyapolloeyesa Br. Born July 11, 2017, Fantastic Fly Apollo comes from a line of Brazilian mares. Fantastic Corona Jr finished second in the 2009 All American Derby-G1 and Los Alamitos Winter Derby-G1, and he finished third in the 2009 Southern California Derby-G1. Paul Jones trained Fantastic Corona Jr to earnings of $541,896.
Adding his two victories to his 2021 record, Fantastic Fly Apollo has eight wins and two seconds in 10 starts. In 2020
he won the Sorocaba Futurity, Brasil II Triplice Coroa, and Campeao dos Campeoes (Champion of Champions).
