 Rite of Election
and
Call to Continuing Conversion
The rite we celebrate today is the second major ritual of the RCIA. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) These catechumens and candidates have been elected (chosen) by God to receive the Sacraments of Initiation. The particular ritual we celebrate today is an adaptation that includes the already baptized as well as those preparing for baptism. The first part of this ritual was celebrated in the home parish of each of the catechumens and candidates. What you are participating in today is one of the three Rites of Election being held this Lent in the Diocese of St. Augustine.
During the season of Lent, these “elect” as they are now called, will begin the “Period of Purification and Enlightenment,” a time for intense, spiritual reflection that will extend to the Easter Vigil. These catechumens and candidates will purify their hearts and minds by celebrating several other minor rituals that will prepare them for the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil or in the case of many of the candidates, one of the Sundays of the Easter Season.
This process of initiation continues with the period of Mystagogia, which follows full initiation into the Catholic Church. The word mystagogia comes from a Greek word that signifies a deepening of the understanding of the mysteries of the faith. While this period lasts for a lifetime, most parishes provide the “neophytes” (newly planted) with a variety of opportunities during the Easter Season to experience life as a part of the Body of Christ whose mission it is to bring Christ to the world.
