Normal Fetal Skull and Brain Anatomy
The skull consists of eight cranial bones.
These bones are connected by structures known as sutures.
Fetal sutures may be noted during a routine sonographic examination as hypoechoic spaces between the bones.
Because of the flexibility of sutures, the fetal cranial bones remain slightly mobile until delivery to facilitate the passage of the skull through the birth canal.
Premature fusion of the sutures is termed craniosynostosis.
